I have never tried authentic meat-based Mexican dishes before because of my religious beliefs, so I was pleasantly surprised to find out that all the meat served here has been halal since 2019. This gesture really demonstrates the business's commitment to inclusivity. Whether you are Muslim or not, the food here is amazing! I highly recommend stopping by if you are in the area.
I recently tried an absolutely delicious Mexican restaurant in South Philly that offers true authentic cuisine. I had heard about this local legend from a food show years ago and had been eager to try it ever since. The owner's story is amazing, but I'll save that for another time or you can watch her episode on Netflix. The restaurant is located on a corner in South Philly, so parking can be tough if you expect to find a spot right out front. When I arrived at 10:30 AM, there was already a line at the door. Yes, you read that correctly - a line at the door at 10:30 AM! During COVID, the restaurant opens at 5:30 AM on Saturdays and Sundays and closes at 3:00 PM or when they run out of food, which explains the early morning line. I highly recommend getting there early to avoid missing out. The menu is simple, with a focus on tacos. They also offer a Veggie taco option. The handmade organic, non-GMO corn tortillas from Lancaster, PA make a noticeable difference. It's worth mentioning that there are 3-4 staff members dedicated solely to making tortillas. The meat is freshly cut in front of you, and the tacos come with a generous amount of sides. The staff are friendly and attentive. Overall, you won't be disappointed dining at this restaurant.
The lamb tacos at this restaurant are incredibly tasty. I tried both types and both were delicious. I didn't have the soup, but many people seemed to be enjoying it. Next time I'll give it a try. On my return visit, we ordered the half kilo deal which came with 12 tortillas. The lamb was absolutely amazing. However, the consomé was a little too salty for my taste and I was disappointed that the tortillas were hard around the edges.
The Barbacoa was delicious. We got there around 12:15 on a Sunday. Waited in line for about 40 minutes. It was worth the wait. There was a little cart outside. We used that as a table. Know what you want before you get inside.
Aaww the beat experience ever!! I am from Toluca so this barbacoa hits the spot for me!! The smells, flavors, everything rakes me back to my home town!! Tamales dulces... Que mas es posible!!!
