This place just gives you the chills in a good way. Makes me extremely proud to be an Afrikaans woman. Makes you believe that the Boers will always find a way to survive and that they will never be oppressed, because they will stand up for themselves, together.
Decided to visit after seeing the signboard indicating the turn off. The road was reasonable. The site was spotless. The first object visible at the site was a stone pyramid. We visited the stone structure and left. When we reached the gate my wife looked on Google and said there should also be a statue. We returned and found it. There should be some sort of sign indicating the path to the statue. Glad we visited it.
We had no idea what this was about, but decided to take a drive to see for ourselves. We asked Google for some history along the way. It seems that it is a monument to a woman who decided to rather cross over the Drakenberg mountains barefoot instead of remained subject to colonial rule. It really is a beautiful monument. Note: if it is raining, I would recommend postponing your trip unless you have a 4x4.
Quite a drive on a not so good dirt road and then about a 200m walk to the statue. Lovely to see but not well maintained.
