A large and eclectic museum. Jumps around a lot in tone one minute, you 're learning about Western PA sports to Lewis and Clark, or Andrew Carnegie to the history of glass, or Mister Rodgers to North American slavery. It can be a bit jarring, but there 's a lot on display here, even if it does not feel organized or form a cohesive narrative through line.Probably the most interesting sections are the Visible Storage or Special Collections. There 's dozens of grouped items that really show off what they have inside their archives. Also enjoyed the Heinz gallery, which comes off as tribute to marketing ingenuity. Missed opportunity to sample some ketchup as part of the exhibit. All together, it 's a decent package that throws a lot at you. I can understand why tickets were good for two days, as there is a ton to see and read up on inside the building. We didn 't take advantage of this, but paid admission is also good at the Fort Pitt Museum, too. A must for any first timer to Pittsburgh.
Oh what a fun and exciting place to learn about Pittsburgh history. Six floors of history. Took 2 boys ages 12 and 10 and they had so much fun especially in the sports museum. There are activities to play and videos to watch and a lot of learning about Pittsburgh sports and celebrities. They couldn't get enough. Went during the free month so all I had to pay for was parking which was $5.00 and food in the little Cafe they have which prices are overpriced but that seems to be the thing at these places. Ordered the tickets online, printed out the receipt and just waited for the day to go. Check in was easy, was handed a map and told have fun. Did the learning steps and stamped the cards on each level and received a pickle pin at the end. You won't regret going but planning spending most of the day there since there is so much to see.
I was surprised at the variety of the displays. We spent hours there and didn't fully see it.The sports exhibit was very large and impressive. And that is coming from someone who doesn't like sports.
Really nice museum with great staff! It’s nice to have a place like this in the city with a focus on Pittsburgh’s history both small scale and large scale. I went in for the first time in a while today to see the exhibit on the Green Book, which was great. I personally love the glass exhibit as someone whose family worked at some of the local factories. It does take longer than you’d think, especially if you want to take your time at every exhibit. The displays have a lot of detail and are put together in a way that really tells a story. Each exhibit has a great, natural flow that makes for a terrific experience.
