If you want a nice, low key, friendly atmosphere to enjoy good Mexican food, go here … much better than the more established restaurants in the Barbican area.
El Chapo has been closed for about 18 months, but today we noticed a new sign and a lot of activity inside. It looks like a new cocktail bar called 'Chulo' serving Latino cuisine. Hopefully it will be open soon.
I made an online reservation but did not receive a confirmation. I decided to visit the restaurant anyway, but it was closed with a sign indicating it will be shut until January 21st. It seems like the business has permanently closed. I recommend not wasting your time trying to visit this restaurant. Instead, I went to Toot as a walk-in and had a delightful meal.
Quite like the set up here, the staff, portion sizes and prices. Just wonder a bit about the marketing and information side of things. We came down a week ago after new year in search of a group fun meal out to counter the interminable wind down of the endless seasonal events. Tricky to park after negotiating the three way traffic light road works. Walked back only to find the place in darkness with a typed note explaining they’re closed until 21st. Everyone’s entitled to holidays especially if they have foreign connections but I wish there had been some warning back in December or on the company website or FB.
El Chapo has an amazing staff team, delivering phenomenal food and service all night. They are super passionate about the food and drinks, with expert knowledge. The venue has a great atmosphere and great decor. Great portion sizes, with food that was clearly made with love. Thanks for a great evening guys!
