Great atmosphere, excellent food, nice talk with local people and owner: It`s a garanted happy experience!:
Wow! We had read about this place on a Facebook group dedicated to Azorean gastronomy and decided that it was a must after the Ponta Delgada tourist information office sent us here when we asked them their advice on a local place where you, yourself, might eat lunch. Mané Cigano is a simple daytime-only establishment filled with middle-aged guys drinking beer or homemade wine cut with soda. But do not, repeat, DO NOT let that or the limited menu deter you from eating there. The specialty here are chicharros, which are fried young mackerel consumed whole, crunchy head, tail, and all (health-conscious sorts can get them grilled, as well . A heap of fresh fish, crisp and greaseless, arrive on your plate, sided with the usual boiled Azorean potatoes and creamy beans enriched by pork fat. You couldn 't possibly pick a better, more economical, more typical thing to eat in Ponta Delgada. Over five weeks, we 'd tried this same preparation at a half dozen restaurants on various islands, and Mané Cigano 's rendition was by far the tastiest. The low-priced tuna steaks, thinly sliced liver, and beef stew in tomato sauce were all quite good, as well. (Unfortunately, sardines were unavailable on our visit, as they weren 't yet in season. The current owner is the founder 's son, and it 's obvious that he 's carrying on a tradition of straightforward, unpretentious deliciousness.
We ate here twice in one week. The first time we had lunch and we sat outside. We thought the food was very good quality, tasted lovely and was good value. The second time we ate later one evening and our experience was not enjoyable. We sat inside and there was a very strange atmosphere. I'm not sure what had happened but the staff all seemed to be very annoyed and most of the customers seemed anxious. I assume the few staff who were there were just extremely overworked as it was busy and they had probably taken feedback from the customers that may have been quite direct. Anyway the food didn't seem as tasty as the first time we ate there and we were looking forward to finishing our food and leaving. Everything was quite slow so we were there longer than preferred however I would probably return again and have a lunch outside overlooking the harbour.
