Used to be great. We would come weekly for my daughter who has celiacs. Since the pandemic the service and atmosphere has changed. Staff are not as friendly and don’t seem to want you around. My last straw was being turned away 30 minutes before closing. I asked if I could buy just one thing for my daughter’s birthday and was met with “No the til is closed”. I left crying (partly from the bind this put on me) but also just again feeling like they don’t care about their customers.
GEM is my favorite gluten free bakery by a mile. Their baked goods have a delicious texture and they aren’t too sweet. Their tiramisu is the best I’ve ever had. And their matcha latte is also my favorite in the city. Highly recommend!
Flavor was decent, the look of the cake was spot on but, I told them I was needing a dairy free SMASH cake for my daughters 1st birthday. What I got was a pretty brick. There was nothing smashable about it. It was difficult to push a knife through it. To say we were devasted is an understatement. My first child never saw their first birthday and this was our last child. I called around for days to find someone to make a cake. What a disappointment.
Hands down, the BEST gluten free baked goods on the west coast. We came from Seattle just to get a gluten free cheesecake for our wedding. And we always make a point to stop here when going through Portland. They have an amazing variety of sweet and savory. The cinnamon rolls are my absolute favorite, but it is all lovely. My fiancé who does not have any food allergies always says (with a mouth of Gluten Free Gem pastries) “I can’t believe this is gluten free”.
