They are truly the king of the roll. They rank second on my favorite sushi joints in Portland, mainly because of John's fabulous roll creations. The Casco Bay roll is a MUST have and any roll that is on special. The pieces are of high quality, though many were frozen and not accurately 100% fresh. Always a nice place to stop, especially during the summer when you cant find a place to park they have a lot behind Joe’s smoke shop. Check this place out if you’re looking for the most creative rolls in Portland.
This is my favorite sushi place in Portland. It isn't fancy and the atmosphere is very casual but the food and the service are always excellent. Their specialty rolls are delicious, the sushi is fresh and well prepared. Also the cooked foods are tasty but offer a variety for those who might be wary of trying raw seafood.
I have eaten at King of the Roll at least 5 times since I moved to Portland last year, and every single time has been an excellent, perhaps even glowing experience. I have never waited to be seated for more than 60 seconds, and the waitresses always are warm and friendly. As atmosphere goes, I would say that it's about average. A nice red paint scheme, proper lighting, and a few decorative plants round out the relaxed vibe quite nicely. On to the food. The quality is excellent, in both taste and presentation. I usually go for sushi, but I did go for a bento box on one of my visits and I was very pleasantly surprised to note that the quantity of food was surprisingly high, particularly for the price. Ah, that's the best part. On one of my visits, a friend and I managed to stuff ourselves (with food to spare) for less than $25 total, including tip, tax, and drinks. The price of the maki rolls range between $2.75 for the excellent vegetarian offerings (amongst which my favorite is the sweet potato roll) and up to $10 for complicated combination plates. Amongst the impressively wide variety of sushi offerings, my favorite would have to be the cooked softshell crab. You must try this if you are there, you will be satisfied. Take it from me. I give it a 5/5, as the food quality is on par with places that are twice as expensive, and the service was top notch. I would always go here over Fuji's or Yosaku, hands down.
