Contribuisci feedbackThis is the best breakfast we have had in Quebec City, and possibly in all of Canada! The homemade hollandaise sauce was delectable drizzled over poached eggs.
I absolutely adored this restaurant, mainly for its outdoor dining option. I enjoy people-watching, and this spot was perfect for that. The food was delicious and reasonably priced. We visited for lunch to escape the rain. I ordered a fruit plate and a vegetable plate, as did my friend. The food was fresh and tasty, especially the sweet fruit. The standout was the wine selection - I have never been let down by the wine choices in Quebec City, and this restaurant was no exception. Don't hesitate to ask for a wine recommendation here.
I have eaten several times at Delice du Roi and liked it well enough to arrange a dinner for 30 people. It is quite simple and unpretentious. The chef is quite good at bistro food, and his Quebec meat pies--especially the one with duck--are hearty and delicious. He has a great nose for value in wine, and, unless you are sitting outside on a rainy night (as happened to me on one occasion) or get too ambitious in ordering, you will have a good time. It is great value for money. Our son, who is a fine chef, did not like the sandwich he ordered one day at lunch, but I told him he was stupid to order an American sandwich in a Quebec bistro. He agreed and was pleasantly surprised by the food his parents received. This is not elegant food, and the quality of the steak is a bit uneven, but that is part of the experience in eating at an informal place like this. For what it is trying to be, Delice du Roi is very good, and I intend to return next month.
My wife and I accompanied our five nephews, ages 10-13, for their first "French food" experience. The restaurant is a simple bistro in a 1682 house in the Vieux Port neighbornood. Karin, our server, gave them good recommendations and a great time. We had the yellow pea soup, a Quebecois staple, the halibut, a pasta dish, and a very good boar/bison meatloaf thingie. It was all delicious. We finished with three shared desserts, which the boys loved. They insisted several days later that I make them creme brulee at home--usually a success, but mine was not nearly as good as Delice du Roy's.I am sorry about history_professor's bad experience, but I am sure that it is not the norm at this lovely old house.
This is a really excellent little place. Cozy and inviting, with great food. Quebecois food through and through, but that's why you travel - to taste the local food rather than another ceasar salad. The staff is truly genuine, and very accommodating of my limited French language skills. We had pea soup, followed by duck tortetiere - perfect melt in your mouth pastry - and finishing with house made chocoloate fondant cake (like a lava cake). Very well priced for the food quality. Good selection of beer and cider on tap. By far our best meal of our stay in Quebec city!
