Hien Nam - Qui Nhon

Food was cold, no tasty, I didn't finish my plate because I didn't like how it taste. I'm not vegetarian but I eat more vegetarian than not vegetarian food, not my favourite vegetarian meal in Vietnam.

After our 9 country tour in Asia, Vietnam takes the cake for best vegan food. This place was amazing—just outside the gate of the Pagoda of the same name. The owner was a sweet 80 yr old woman with limited English and a huge toothless smile. They had an incredible selection of veggies in their buffet plus the requisite fake meats if that’s your thing. Tasty, varied textures and ridiculously cheap. Worth a visit to central Vietnam.

First of all, thanks to all the previous reviewers and for pointing out the location. I visited Hien Nam earlier today 05 May 2017 and enjoyed it. It was still quiet about 16.30, I think they had just reopened after an afternoon siesta It's possible I misunderstood this part and I noticed people turning up on scooters and taking meals to go from that moment on. There is a friendly and welcoming old lady who put some rice on a plate, handed me some tongs and pointed to the 10 or so bowls of food to serve myself.. I took a little of everything, but she suggested a little more of each and not to forget the okra. She was right the okra was good The lady spoke some basic English, never once hurried me, came over with a mug of tea, pointed out the wifi password !! and then brought me some soup. The soup: It was tasty, with both sour and citrus elements and full of herbs, tofu, leeks and other veggies. Noticing my obvious pleasure, I was given a second bowl of it how could I refuse? . The soup changes daily As for the food itself. there was a range of tastes and textures, the okra, the kimchi, the greens all fresh.. I'm not a big fan of mock meat and thankfully there were only one or two items, which I tried and which were also full of flavour. You can see what I had in the picture. After checking out the plethora of 'com chay ' within our first 24 hours here, we easily settled on Hien Nam as our favourite. The man who seemingly runs the establishment is more than hospitable; the servings beyond ample; with apparently set prices (18 K according to the notice on the wall). The eatery is large and open-plan, with monks and nuns passing through from the adjoining temple, and even offers complimentary wifi. Updated from previous review on 2017-01-03

Hien Nam was doing a good trade at lunchtime when we visited which you can take as an indication they're doing com dia right! I guess the price (15,000 VND) is a draw card too. As the last reviewer noted, the staff just put food down in front of you. No ordering. But this isn't special treatment for tourists who don't speak Vietnamese, everyone just gets a bit of everything. A few people wandered up and pointed to things they wanted more of, or wanted left if their plate but no one ordered anything, per se. What arrived on our table was the best food we've had in Vietnam at this style of eatery. First, the soup was really refreshing with tiny cubes of tofu and lots of greens. It tasted citrusy as well as slightly bitter so I'm thinking kafir lime leaves. They brought us iced jasmine tea in glasses which might have been special tourist treatment because everyone else just filled their own plastic cups from a big thermos. All the dishes were just a cut above the other com dia we've eaten lighter and fresher with more distinct flavours in each dish. I was delighted to see cooked jackfruit on my plate, as well as a bitter melon dish, green mango salad, and other things I can't name or even really describe! But everything was delicious. It was a nice change to have mostly veggies on my plate in great variety with a bit of tofu and just a few pieces of fake meat. Updated from previous review on Monday March 02, 2015
