Hainanese chicken rice with lots of scallions and ginger sauce! generous portion and reasonable price. We do take out everytime and always hit this place up when we come to Vancouver. It’s kind of out of the way and not a fancy place, but the chicken rice is so good.
I came here because of a post I saw on Hainanese Chicken Rice and Roti Prata posted on vancouverfoodie 's Instagram. I had mixed feelings about Asian food sold overseas, but after looking at the reviews of this place, I decided to try it out. The signs said 'a taste of Singapore '. It 's a big claim but if they dare to put that up I guess it has to be good? I was hoping the owners were Singaporean/Malaysian. Turns out? No. The moment we walked in the staff spoke Cantonese. The menu options were a little dated (and weird). I tried ordering Chicken curry and they didn 't have lol. I wanted to order Roti Prata and they asked if I wanted Roti or Prata. I gave up and ordered Chicken Rice. I have to give them credit for using the actual Singaporean food names in the menu (I 'll give them a plus for using kopi instead of coffee). Chicken Rice is okay for overseas standard I guess. It 's actually pretty decent but in no way near similar to Singapore Chicken Rice. I would say it is closer to the Hong Kong Style Chicken Rice. But for posing off as Hainanese Chicken Rice is a big insult in my opinion. I wouldn 't have been this critical if they didn 't put 'A taste of Singapore ' on the signboard. Everything is wrong on so many levels if you were to compare to the actual one. From what I heard, chicken rice is the top dish at this place. I also read that beef curry is another top dish (which is odd because there is no such thing as beef curry when Indians treat cows as a sacred animal). I 'm not sure how good the laksa and curries are after eating their chicken rice. I was in BC for around a month and missed Singaporean food terribly. I was actually looking forward to this place but it made me sad, terrible and overall disappointed. I had to run to the Asian supermarket to buy loads of Prima Laksa LaMian to satisfy my cravings. Buy a ticket to Singapore instead. You will not be disappointed.
While the roti at this restaurant was tasty, the chicken curry did not meet the standard set by Hawkers Delight in Vancouver. Personally, I believe I can make a better curry using Gourmet Spice Pastes for Curry or Laksa. This restaurant has a lot of room for improvement and is overly hyped.
I visited my sisters in Richmond and was surprised when they ordered delivery from Prata Man Malaysian restaurant in Oak's Plaza for dinner. They recommended the Hainanese Chicken, which is their signature dish and sells out quickly. They were right - it was one of the best chicken dishes I've had in Vancouver, comparable to Singaporean restaurants in Singapore. The chicken was juicy and flavorful, and a whole chicken only cost around $31. The mix BBQ Satay was also delicious, with the chicken being the standout. The Curry Beef Brisket had a good portion and strong curry flavor but was not too spicy. The fried rice noodle was a bit oily and spicy, while the Curry Vegetable dish was lovely. Overall, it was a great dinner that exceeded my expectations, and at around $100 for four people, it was great value for money. I highly recommend trying Prata Man for a different and delicious dining experience.
