Tried the raved about dumplings and they were okay but not spectacular. The wrapping was thin and there was soup inside but taste was nothing memorable. Also tried the green onion pancake which was very filling. The noodle in peanut paste had way too much peanut butter. Did not find it that cheap either.
When this outfit first opened up in Scarborough ( Midland & Sheppard ), their Shanghainese food offerings were one of the most authentic and best in town. Few years have gone by, they have now relocated their shop to the more affluent Richmond Hill area but sadly, quality of the food has gone down hill.Apart from some really execellent and stand-out noodle dishes, the rest of our meal was borderline acceptable. Compare to others like Shanghai Shikumen, Northern Dumpling Kitchen or Sika Deer, their products were mostly mediocre and prepared rough with an edge! However, I will return just for their noodles!
Heavily promoted soup dumplings at 4 for $0.99 were juicy and hot, not bad but they lacked the complex and satisfying blend of flavors of better dumpling restaurants like Din Tai Fung or 3-6-9. Other menu items are inexpensive but vary in quality. Duck was overpowered by sweetness, ribs had an imbalance of vinegar, but some other dishes were pretty good. Service was typically impersonal. Overall a great value for the money but not a gourmet place.
Great place for authentic Shanghai dim sum. Lots of options and all are reasonably priced. There are two locations, one in Richmond Hill on Highway 7 and one in Scarborough on Sheppard Ave E. Tried both places and both are good. The one in Scarborough is much smaller and only accepts debit card or cash. The Richmond Hill location accepts Visa. Service can definitely improve. Environment/ atmosphere is very much like a simple restaurant in China.
The dumpling is on special for as low as $0.99/$1.99 for the first 4. There are different tasting and you have to try at least one. The taste is great. Also the steamed chicken is buy one get one (in coupon) for free. Other dishes are also good, except the smoked fish. Lunch time is always packed with customers on weekends unless you go after 1:30
