Peggy's is now under new management. Peggy has returned to Greece and been replaced by a relaxed Antipodean. Good quality, home cooked food right next to the train station. A choice of toasted sandwiches and home made soup. Nice choice of teas not like chain coffee shops which make dreadful tea. And a good range of cakes for afternoon tea very handy for Strawberry hill station but also the University and Strawberry Hill House.
The food is always delicious, freshly prepared in front of you and great value for the money. The hardest thing is getting out of there without a brownie (if you’re trying to be good! Peggy is wonderful
My husband and I were on way back home from a very early funeral- having had nothing to eat. Went into Peggy's off the train to get a bacon roll. She had run out of rolls so offered to make a bacon sandwich. Ok- fine. Mine was ok- not particularly fresh bread but edible. My husband's had one piece of bread which was so stale it was curling up. The other slice seemed OK- not brilliant! I told him he should say something but he wouldn't. Think we felt it a bit ridiculous to make a fuss about a sandwich. In the end he left half the top slice and just ate the bottom half and the bacon. We had already paid so when we left said the bread was stale. Peggy looked at us amazed and said we should have said something. I said I had told my husband to say something but that I was surprised she had served it up. We're talking sandwiches here- not a gourmet meal. Anyone knows when they are making a sandwich whether the bread is fresh or not. I would never have served this to my family let alone to people who are paying me £3.00 for it. Won't be going back which is a shame because it is just down the road from where we live. Peggy needs to up her game. Wouldn't recommend!
Popped into Peggy's with my chicken vindaloo that I had just bought in Manchester. Like all typical local station cafes she didn't mind me eating it there and then. She stopped serving all other customers to attend to me....yes me....me me me ....because I ....yes I had a train to catch! Look at me the person catching the train! She then had a bath, laundered all her clothing and hosed the cafe down with disinfectant before making me a coffee, which I didn't really want. What I did want though, was to use the bathroom! Yes that's right. the public go int o the cafe so it must be a public toilet. When I say public I mean me....yes me....rememember me? I'm the person catching a train! I didn't have anything and I couldn't pay by credit card, not only that, Peggy muttered something about my Cath Kidston bag which upset me so much that I came on Tripadvisor to be jolly rude about her. Because that's what I ....(the person who catches the train) do. Altogether a lovely experience.
