There are a lot of other stores selling this but I...think this place has the most varieties, and probably the best price. A few other stalls/stores sell smaller plain flavored schneeballen for 2 euros each. Schneeballen is basically a deep fried pastry crunchy ball, with many icing flavors, from original (sugar coated) to various fruits and chocolates. Very novelty like. If this was in the U.S.A., this would be a perfect county fair item. The price is alright. 3 Euros for a special/big one, and 1.5 euros for a smaller/plain sugar coated one. One is supposed to smash this first and eat the pieces. But one can eat this like an apple.
Delicious! Were sent to us to Lienen, NRW, as Covid makes vacation difficult.
Bought two of the so called snowballs this morning, one coffee flavored, the other hazelnut. This was our first taste of the dessert so I don't know if they are all hard, but these were. Inside the candy shell cover, there are strips of dough,...resembling pie crust in texture and taste. Eating it like an apple produces mounds of crumbs, so be aware. In the center of both balls was sweet chocolate. The girl who served us was upbeat and spoke English. There were some 8 or 9 other choices of snowballs
They have a lot of different varieties of this regional dessert, but I found it to be a rather dry, crumbly, semi-sweet bread-like cookie. I would suggest that four people could easily share one and be amply satisfied.
