It just didn’t taste like Greek food at all I’ve been to Greece several times . The pita was good yet $3 a piece is a bit pricey , but the tzatziki tasted very plain; it had no garlic, no dill, and no mint in it. Pork souvlaki was SWEET, which is not something you expect in this dish. Greek salad had no red onion, no bell peppers, very few tomatoes, and lots of lettuce. Does it sound like a Greek salad? Not to me, and It didn’t taste like one either But the biggest disappointment was moussaka. I am a big fan of this dish, but not the version I got in Athena restaurant in St. Augustine. The meat was very dry; I found some traces of eggplant in it but couldn’t taste it. Overall it tasted like a mediocre version of a Shepherd’s pie, and it was definitely not worth the $19 they charged. The service was friendly, but not enough to compensate for the food quality.
We decided to go to a mediterranean restaurant for lunch and found Athena. Looking at the menu we felt this would be a good place. We ordered the Hummus platter for an appetizer, the hummus was ok not much flavor and the pita was fresh. I ordered the Avgo Lemono (chicken lemon rice soup) which was very tasty and the grilled chicken sandwich with potato salad. The chicken was very tough with no flavor and I was unable to finish it. My wife ordered the Caesar salad with grilled chicken and again the chicken was tough with no flavor. We told the waiter about the chicken and he said he will tell the chef. The price was 45.62 for a lunch that was inedible and we not be going there again. Choose wisely!!!! I appreciate the discount. Salt is not the only spice that adds flavor to grilled chicken. The toughness of the chicken is what made it inedible for me. There are ways to tenderize chicken breast that could help.
Fantastic food and service! Tonya was our server and she was very attentive and sweet. The food was amazing and the portions were generous!
So good! The retcina captured our taste buds; the food was lovely and the atmosphere allowed for unfettered conversation. Bonus: easy parking.
David and I have been coming to this wonderful restaurant since 1993, when the original owners, Gus and Maria, ran it. They were like family to us, and dearly loved. We are breakfast there every day, and we still come to the Athena when we are in town. They have the best breakfast ever, especially their omelets! They have an exceptional Greek salad, and the baklava is the best we've ever had. Even if you're too full to move, take some baklava to eat later you'll be glad!
