Le Relais du Chateau

We stayed at camping d'Arpheuilles and went here for dinner. We made reservations before we went there. The staff is really friendly and helpful, but only French-speaking. The food is simple and great. If you are close to the window, you have a real good view as well. If we are in the neighbourhood again, we will go there again.

Very nice restaurant overlooking the castle where you can walk to before or after the meal. The food is good and features local products and producers and one of the specialty are the frogs which are served in very (too? large quantities. Bred is fresh too and the side dishes have a nice combination of vegetables.

It has a large terrace with view down on to the chateau and the Loire which on a sunny day is the place to be. The interior is somewhat like a large village hall with little to please the eye except the food. The menu is formulaic with focus on whitebait and frogs legs. One can get snails if one wants too. My grandchildren have to be taken there every year when they come for their holiday in our house about 20 minutes away. The holiday would not be the same without a meal there. Frozen supplies are used. Service is quick despite the large number of diners normally to be found there. Its noisy and crowded but good fun. The French answer to American fast food.

The location of this large restaurant is amazing, above a beautiful small chateau built out into a meander of the Loire. The staff were exceptionally helpful and the food was an experience. Along the river the speciality is grenouille and Le Relais is no exception. In fact a lot of its offered dishes were food that could never make it onto any British menu but there are hundreds of covers and it is very popular with locals who were en famille, really friendly and ate huge quantities of everything. Our experiments were tentative but positive and the experience as a whole was absolutely exceptional. It has a permanent place in our affections.
