My Dad was partial to the Martini's and I always got the **** Bridget without the alcohol. The food has gotten better overtime or perhaps my tastes have changed. I have taken my son there on many occasions, mostly birthdays, he loves it and we both have the Sam Spade special, which is delicious. The atmosphere is perfect and can be appreciated on many levels. On one special occasion, my 16th birthday, my Dad and I not only had a special dinner, but the staff treated me as if I were a princess. We then walked up the street to the Geary Theater and came back to John's for late coffee. I love this place!
My wife and I were closing out a week long stay in San Francisco, and were looking for something, simple, varied, and inexpensive. After looking at the reviews and bio on this site we walked in the rain to John's. We were surprised to find a restaurant with white linen table cloths and wait-staff in ties. When we reviewed the menu we found the entree prices to be expensive, but we're from Orlando. Seafood beginning around $25.00 per entree and most steaks at about $30, but not a la carte. Fortunately, it was raining and we stayed. The service was great and the food was perfectly prepared and timely delivered.
The service in this restaurant was the worst I've ever experienced. When I complained to the manager they seemed not to care. Even if the food and prices were good (which they were not) I would NEVER eat there again. And not only would I not recommend it to others, I would warn them away from the restaurant. This place does not care about its patrons and ruins the meal with its attitude and poor service.
We have been going to John's Grill for many years and always enjoy it. Nice, clubby atmosphere and always good food.
Fantastic meal went to my birthday. Hatte shrimp cocktail and steak was cooked for perfection
