I came to dinner at a Wk day because Little Star Pizza from SF is the best deep dish I had myself. It is not easy to find parking in the neighborhood...
Having gone to school at Berkeley, I’ve always been a fan of Zachary’s – famous for their deep dish pizzas. After moving to San Francisco, lots of friends recommended Little Star as having similar quality pizza. I’ve been there a few times now, and dare I say I think I like it even better than Zachary’s! The kicker has to be the cornmeal in the crust, which gives the pizza a nice satisfying crunch still, even with all those toppings stuffed deep inside (my favorite is the signature ‘Little Star’ . The place is always busy, even late on a Sunday night we waited forever (almost an hour – mainly since we had 5 people, and there aren’t many bigger tables there. I’d recommend going with a smaller group, or the take out option, which I think is what I’d like to do next time so we don’t have to wait so long. Be aware not only could there be a long wait, but the pizza takes a while to come out too, so be prepared – we always order the Caprese Salad and Spicy Chicken Wings to hold us over till the food comes. The atmosphere is San Francisco hip, with a well stocked bar, and very dim lighting – I can barely see my pizza before I wolf it down. Definitely a place to try out if you like the deep dish style pizza!
Now, I grew up in new york city (home of the best damn pizza in the world!!! , and I love my pizza. Having recently moved to the Yay Area! …I was psyched about everything, except the pizza. All I knew about California pizza is that you guys threw some weird shiz on your pizzas… artichokes? guacamole? carne asada? Ok ok, so on to the important stuff – turns out there’s some pretty darn tasty pizza in the bay (and not all that weird either! , and Little Star is a nice spot for getting your fix of big-ass Chicago style pizza. I’ve got to compare this place to Zachary’s, and unfortunately – it doesn’t hold up, but that doesn’t mean it’s not good! I think my only real complaint is the hours. Want Little Star for lunch? I don’t think so! They don’t open until 5. If I had a myFaves pizza 5, Little Star would definitely take a spot.
