Passed by and had Amami Sushi in my bookmarks. I was able to try it on a Saturday night and it was fairly busy with people and to go orders. The lover boat was indeed a lot of fish and looks nice. But again quality is lacking. The Philadelphia roll was mainly cream cheese. The sliced ginger was old and fairly dry. I'd say if you want cheap-ish and not so great quality but big pieces of fish then try Amami. The service was good and you get a lot of food. But the quality is lacking. They have multiple food and health violations . They have a small parking lot and street parking
This was my first time going to the original Amami sushi and I was very pleased. It's a bit smaller than the one in South SF so I can definitely see it being busier at peak times. I came for dinner on a Thursday and my party of 4 was seated right away. Service was fast and efficient. We got the sushi deluxe as well as the chirashi. All the fish was very fresh. Also want to note that the bathroom was EXTREMELY CLEAN, like hotel/resort level clean. Not sure if it was just cleaned but reading other reviews seems like a norm. Just something to mention since I don't see this as often at other restaurants
Amami Sushi is a casual Japanese dining spot that is most well known for their omakase set. There are multiple Amami Sushi locations, with this one being on the busy El Camino Real right by the border of Millbrae. They have a small parking lot just for their restaurant. The inside features several tables as well as counter seating by the sushi bar. I have dined here on multiple occasions for dinner as well as ordered takeout from here. The dining experience inside tends to be a bit mixed, usually depending on how busy they are at the time. Even if there is a table available, I have found that it can take a while before they clean it up and allow for seating. The same can be said after ordering food where it can take a short or long time for the food to arrive on different occasions. They seem to get a lot of delivery orders depending on the day and at times, that can make the dine-in experience not as good overall. As for the food here, all the sashimi tastes fresh and very good. I recommend their omakase which may sound pricey at $42, but is worth it and affordable compared to other omakase which can go for well over a hundred dollars. The omakase includes a nice variety of nigiri with generous cuts of sashimi. They add a little bit of garnish on some of them which gives them a nice little kick. The wasabi here is actually great as well. The ratio of fish to rice is just right to make the entire meal not overly filling and full of flavor. Besides their omakase, their set meals, rolls, and combos are certainly not bad as well. I've tried their teriyaki chicken which is tender and flavorful. Their sashimi combo also has a nice selection of thick cuts of sashimi.
First visit... The exterior suggests a mediocre restaurant hides within. But looks can be deceiving. As soon as we opened the door, the drab exterior revealed an absolutely hopping and large dining room with a long wait list. Good thing we called ahead in the afternoon to reserve a table. Service was a little perfunctory and hurried. But it's clear they're trying to turn tables quickly, so I guess that tracks. Food: Agedashi tofu: untraditional not brothy at all, but basically crisp fried silken tofu with a dipping sauce. Really delicious but not what we expected. Hamachi kama: good, but lacked the grilled flavor that often puts this dish over the top Various rolls: All very tasty and generous portion sizes. LOVE the fresh wasabi. Various nigiri: yellowtail, tuna, unagi, scallop, octopus all as good or better than any neighborhood sushi joint. The portions are more than fair, the fish was properly cut and tasted clean and fresh, and the menu had everyone you'd want. Stir fried udon: the only loser of the night. Not bad or anything, but didn't have enough flavor. Just boring. I've had much better versions. Value: OMG we all stuffed our faces for $40 each all in (no booze). Given that a half decent burrito in SF is like $22 these days, I'd call this a terrific value. We all walked away extremely happy and impressed. We'll be back.
