Thick with this special crust, or thin option as a New York style, the shop keepers are eager to please and and passionate about their pizza. Try it!
I think eating here 3 times in the last 5 days warrants a review. I really thought this place couldn 't be better than my other favorite pizza place in PB, which I won 't mention here, but I gave it a chance, and oh my it is good! I prefer the Detroit style, with the cheese baked around the edge of the 'deep dish ' crust :O :O :O I like pepperoni and mushrooms. I like it so much that I 've already lined up my pizza places in Detroit when I go for a music festival next month with the guidance of the owner Fred. Fred and his wife are so nice! I really like supporting a place where the owners care about the food and their customers. I felt welcomed right away, and I feel like we are friends after my 2nd visit. CANNOLIS! They make them fresh, and they are possibly better than Mona Lisa 's in Little Italy?? Definitey way bigger, way more chocoloate chips, and I don 't give a F about Monas anymore. Why are you still reading this? Go get me a slice too!!
The board outside this joint says it 's 'Not Your Average Pizza ' while I think it 's much better than that. Here they let NO bad stuff get into the kitchen before we get the food. A couple days ago I had a slice of their fluffy Sicilian pizza. Any Italian or Sicilian restaurant owner needs to get here to have a slice so they taste the standard they need to set in order to thrive. Before leaving they would be wise to get one for their sous chef. The most remarkable thing is the red sauce on top of the Sicilian slice. In a previous review I mentioned another pizza joint having a sauce that has the natural sweetness from the tomato being prevalent WITHout being sugary. Square Pizza 's is actually a little better while I know this one would pair very well with pasta entrees. Today I got a whole Cadillac, their meat lover 's style, pizza on Boston instead of Detroit crust. On the outside it looks like a typical 'New York ' crust but it 's actually more dense. Biting into 2 Cadillac slices stacked together with the tops touching each other is the meat lover 's DREAM. The sweetness from caramelized meat having NO sugary flavor is just the start of it. Because of my experience here, it 's appalling that Yelp moved nearly half (over 40% of the 95 reviews for Square Pizza to the 'not recommended ' section when I checked. Among them are 15 5 star reviews from Yelpers who wrote 10 reviews. At least one of them in the 'not recommended ' section gave this place 5 stars wrote over 100 reviews. Previously I 've gotten the most 'useful ' clicks on Yelp because I said F* the owner, berated ownership misconduct, bashed them for taking advantage of consumers ' lack of knowledge. Now I must say F* Yelp since I can 't argue against what has been written about their extortion attempts then some. Actually I need to change it **** Yelp! Based on my personal experience with the pizza I encourage people to get over here, eat a slice, take it from there. People who stay away from Square Pizza don 't know what they 're missing.
The first time I took a bite of this Pizza, my mouth was full, but I managed to crack a smile and bob my head up and down and through the cheese, sauce and dough in my mouth I uttered to the owner 's, 'This is good Pizza. ' There is no Pizza quite like this in Pacific Beach. I had the good fortune of being given a behind the scenes look and taste of their high quality ingredients and was given an education on how their Pizza 's are made. Everything from how the dough is freshly prepared everyday down to how to season the pans, and lastly how to properly eat Pizza, which I learned is Two Slices at a time! They have two styles, The Beach Slice, and The Detroit Red Top. The Beach slice is thinner and crispy baked with the sauce and cheese added after it is out of the oven. The Detriot Red Top is a thicker crust baked with the cheese on and pushed to the edges to make a delicious, cheesy edge. The sauce is added after it comes out of the oven. Both styles are unique, delicious, sweet and savory. I can 't decide which style I like better, they are both great. The Owner 's are great people stop by and say hi to Fred and Poliana, and try the Pizza, I hope you love it as much as I do!
This place is awesome. I'm from Detroit and was taken by surprise to see someone take an interest in Detroit Style Pizza and do a great job of making it. Fred is awesome as well as the rest of the staff I met there. I haven't tried the Boston style pizza but the Cannoli's were damn good. Stop by if you're tired of eating the crappy New York style pizza around here, promise you won't regret it.
