The menu had a meatless section, which we appreciated but it wasn't exactly clear how to make those options vegan. The staff was receptive to questions about vegan and vegetarian options, but we had to specify that dairy meant butter and milk and the dish components weren't very clear so it took a good deal of questions and specification to attain vegan options. Overall the dishes were pretty bland, but perhaps it was because we ordered them mild in terms of spice. We got the vegetable pakoras (I liked their chili chutney? but greatly preferred Karma's mint chutney), bhindi aloo and daal mahkni with no cream. I love Indian food, so finding a place open around lunch was nice. I do feel like naan is simple enough that it could easily be vegan as it is at other places, but they did not have a vegan naan. Additionally, the service was nearly nonexistent, perhaps because of the available buffet, which had vegan options but didn't seem like a good option. I feel like the cost for vegetarian/vegan dishes didn't aptly reflect the lower cost of ingredients with an average cost of $11-13. For the cost, I would prefer to patronize a fully plant-based restaurant. I did enjoy the quiet atmosphere. Updated from previous review on 2016-08-13
I went in when it was very slow and I'm sure this isn't always the case but there was only one waiter and he did not understand the difference between vegetarian and vegan. I personally don't want to eat animals but I believe it's even worse to waste, so it was very sad to me when I ordered a dish thinking it was vegan, then having it not be, must be thrown away to receive the proper order. Thank you cows. That being said when I did receive my order, it was delicious, but I still had a nervousness about it which made it much harder to enjoy, also I tried to explain to the waiter in a positive fashion but he didn't quite understand and seemed as if I was upset. I really just wanted to make sure he knew that I was basically explaining a food allergy and then he gave me the allergen, not that he should take offense but that it is a rather serious manner. Also their menu says on the front that they cater to vegan and vegetarians, so it was rather disappointing that this wasn't exactly the case. Anyway the food was great but you might want to try when there is more than one server.
I've been here a couple times since they are open on Sunday and close to the Jordan Commons theater. It's a nice place to stop for dinner and they can veganize quite a few of the options on their menu. The food was tasty and flavorful.
