Best Bun Bo Hue in town, and half the price of other overrated places.
The best bánh bèo in all of California! The dried shrimp is freshly prepared, and the rice cakes are steamed to perfection, just the right softness to scoop up with your spoon. Each serving carries a delightful aroma. You can’t just stop at one! The bún bò is exceptional here as well. As you can see in my photo, the broth is clear and not overloaded with oil or spices. It has a natural lemongrass fragrance. Today, I had a piece of pork with cartilage, and I was pleasantly surprised by how clean the flavor was—the meat was cooked in pure water. You know how sometimes pork skin can have a gamey or dark meat taste? Not here! When my grandmother used to cook with pork bones, it would take 2 or 3 rounds for the water to clear, and you could really taste the freshness of the pork after such a lengthy cooking process. Don’t expect much in terms of service, though. My mother and I had just finished our bánh bèo at our little two-person table when they placed the bún bò on the adjacent table without a word. But who cares? Just enjoy the home-cooked flavors and settle up at the counter with cash.
The food was of good quality and portion size. I'm not really a fan of large noodles, but the egg rolls were excellent, especially the one with the large shrimp. I would almost give it a 5-star rating, but I think it's more of a matter of personal preference in the end.
