Greater Purpose Brewing Company

They had 4 beers on tap on a Saturday afternoon. The beer was ok but maybe we would come back for ping pong and football. They did have tables inside and outside and a food truck. So few beer though and we had two and neither were great.

I went to this establishment with my dog; but because of their open parking lot lounge forcing the other 8 or so patron to also contain their dog’s on a leash; made for a bit of tension between the dog’s. This made the experience rather sad and uncomfortable for myself and the other people that were there. Perhaps dog’s should not be allowed in establishments like this in Santa Cruz.In Sacramento at the Sacyard; they have a place similar to the Greater Purpose Brewery; except almost everyone’s dog is allowed off of the leash to roam free and to go socialize with the other dogs. Anybody that has a dog that they actually spend time with and take places; usually finds out how dog’s behavior differs off of a leash as opposed to when they are on a leash.Dogs are highly social animals very much like we are. They don’t typically go looking to bite people and fight other dog’s; EXCEPT when their owner is holding them back with a leash. Dog’s get mixed signals from their owner’s by doing this. A person cautiously pulls the leash to hold the dog back and the dog’s more often feel that as tension; the same as anyone would feel if they were violently shoved. The tension causes the dog to react; which causes the other dog’s on a leash to react. Off of the leash does not create this anxiety in dogs. They might look to the untrained eye as though they are getting ready to fight.There are a lot of dog owners in Santa Cruz, and if the people weren’t so conservative with having dog’s on a leash; they would find dog’s to be much friendlier and relaxed in their city along with the people. Unfortunately dog owners in Santa Cruz have to worry about their dog’s getting hit by a car; which causes them to be more conservative with letting their dog’s off of the leash. If dog owners trained their dog’s to be off the leash as much as they train them on the leash; they would have a much safer and trusted companion. These are concepts that most people won’t ever understand; because they don’t care and they are too full of fear to even try; much less learn.

I've been here twice in the last month or so! It's a fun place to hang while drinking beer and playing games. I love that it's dog and kid friendly too! The beer is not always the best I have to say though.. the last time we went we had this very unusual tasting beer that I couldn't finish (and I LOVE beer). It may have been grapefruit flavor, odd in color, and there were glasses of it left everywhere so I'm assuming we weren't the only ones who didn't enjoy it.. but! It's okay, we still really enjoy this place.

I definitely want to give this place another try because it has a lot going for it, but our first visit was a letdown. First of all, they were out of IPA, and only had 3 other beers to choose from. 3 beers at a decent sized brewery seems odd to me, especially on a Saturday night. We also had a big group with lots of kids and according to the website they have a food truck on Saturday's which we were counting on but no food truck. Cool space, tons of parking, GREAT for kids but the beer food situation was a big miss for us tonight. Maybe worth calling before going to confirm food and beer?

This is a regular place for my pals and me to enjoy a chill hang with a couple of beers. The staff are great and the atmosphere is nice. The only reason for 4 and not 5 stars is that the beers themselves leave something to be desired. They're not bad, but they're far from the best in town. Otherwise, it's a great place to spend some quality time.
