I love it every time I visit madeira. my favorite restaurant on the north side of the island o polar is the best in camara de lobos on the south side.) it was introduced by my insidious who are native of the island to both places. the espetada, huh, salsichas, fried mais, batatas fritas, ensalada and bolo do caco are spectacular. the ambiente of the restaurant is casual and partly half-open air for the beautiful environment of sao vicente. Make sure to have a nice cold coral or two while they are there. wonderful staff and owner.
Having had more than our fare share of seafood in the past few days we were craving some well cooked meat on the fire. Being South Africans, who braai (barbecue regularly at home, our expectations are high and after Several trips to the island we...were yet to find somewhere that satisfied us. Until we discovered this little gem. We’d read then reviews and so tried to tie our visit in with a road trip around the island on the Friday. Unfortunately they were closed. On the Saturday we tried to call to see if they were open, but it went to answerphone and I failed to leave a message. Just as we were heading out to eat in Punta do Pargo (a lot closer to where we were staying they called me and confirmed they were open. A quick u turn and 46km later we were in Sao Vicente and were not disappointed. Loved this place unpretentious, un rushed with the open barbecue in view and a lovely hint firewood smell in the air. Yes, it’s by a busy roadside, but by the time we sat down we didn’t notice anymore. Both the waiter and chef were extremely friendly and between them knew enough English to make up my appalling inability to converse in Portuguese. I went for the mixed grill, consoling of substantial portions of chicken, rump steak, sausage and ribs/pork belly all cooked wonderfully. My daughter had the entremedea (ribs which were amazing, but the highlight was the generous Espetade da Vaca (beef skewer which my wife had ordered. Cooked to perfection and with the beef being so tender, it has to be the best we’ve tried, both in Madeira and mainland Portugal. Some of the best Milho Frito we have had as well, and my wife and daughters all loved the chips. Great coffee too thoroughly enjoyed my Bica (espresso to finish off the meal (I am a coffee nut too . We didn’t indulge in any, but there was an extensive array of wines on display. I don’t think they do much in the way of dessert, but we would have been way too full anyway. There were some ice creams/lollies available to satisfy the kids at least. Definitely will be back on my next trip (and the next etc. can’t wait to try their t bone. Whether you are just passing by or make a journey like we did, you won’t be disappointed!
I walked here in the pm from a local hotel just to check it out. Went for dinner and had the beef skewer with side salad and boiled potatoes. All very good (although the meat was over salted to my taste but very tender...and perfectly cooked). With drinks for 2 €40. Sunset by the sea pool 100m away awesome!
We are great lovers of churrascarias as we first visited them in Portugal. These are local restaurants without fancy menus and decor but with great BBQ dishes. When planning our trip through Madeira my eye fell on it and we had to visit. Friendly staff...I asked what the specialty was and this was the espetada of chicken. My wife had the pork ribs. When it was served it was a big portion of meat grilled and spiced to perfection. The chicken was delicious and so were the ribs. I loved the boiled potatoes with butter and spices. As it was a bit much for the 2 of us we concentrated on finishing the ribs. When the staff saw that there was a lot of chicken left they were worried that I didn't like it . I loved it, so I asked for a take away. Next day on the balcony of the hotel in Funchal we finished the cold chicken and I must admit it was even better. Pity I didn't ask which spices were used, but I will certainly try it at home. I looked forward to it and was not disappointed. So when in the neighborhood and are a bit hungry this is the place to be if you are a meat lover.
