I ordered the Filletto Gorgonzola; the sauce was heavenly and the steak was perfectly cooked. My husband had the Veal Saltimboca and he really enjoyed it. Both meals were served with oven roasted potatoes and warm homemade bread. We shared a bottle of Montepulciano d'abruzzo that was divine and reasonably priced.
I could write in Italian but I chose English so that everyone reads this. Here's what happened: Me and my family arrived next to the restaurant at 2 pm. My mother walked in to ask if it was still possible to eat and she was told that the kitchen was closed (tripadvisor said it would close 30 minutes later) but we could still have pizzas. She came outside to tell us and in less than 5 minutes we entered the restaurant. An old blond woman basically got mad at us and started talking to us like we broke something on our way in, saying that the kitchen was closed and that apparently we took too long (I swear it was three minutes tops).Nothing wrong if your kitchen closes, it's our bad if we arrive late but:A) You put the exact time you stop serving food on tripadvisorB) Most importantly you should be polite about it. No need to get mad and treat us that badly. When you call yourself Italian restaurant you don't only expect Italian dishes but also some warmth and manners coming from the staff. Never again will me or my family set foot in this place and most surely I'll let everyone know how we were treated today.
First things first, Pizzeria Garibaldi is conveniently located in the heart of Schongau. It's a short stroll to the Marienplatz, the town center. The interiors are homely, warm and authentically Italian. For once, I fancied pasta. As a vegetarian, I ordered the penne a siciliana. When it arrived, I was amazed at the very generous portion size (given the sub-10Euro price tag) and the smell coming from this very tasty-looking dish. The taste was heavenly, fresh sauce and juicy pasta. My fellow diners had pizza. While the pizzas looked super (and they did all say they tasted nice), I wasn't jealous of them for once, given my delicious dish. As dessert I had Tartufo, which came with cream and some fresh fruit. Good, but even better was the wine I ordered. Inexpensive, generous and tasty. It was the house red, which is highly recommendable. The staff was friendly and welcoming.
The food is good. I had a pasta with aubergine, and my friend had a pizza, and we enjoyed the meals. We are both ovo-vegetarian and they satisfied our dietary requirement. However, we both asked for water to drink and we both got huge glasses of carbonated drink. It tasted so revolting, I don't think it was water. We then had to look up the word for tap water in German (their English wasn't very good, which is fair enough), which we then asked for. What seemed like an age later (over 10 minutes),? we got a glass of tap water. Keep in mind that there was nobody else there in the restaurant. It was just your typical miserable German waitress. The pizza that was ordered, was a standard no cheese pizza with aubergine on top (it may have been some other vegetable, in any case it was one of the optional toppings you pay extra for). However the waitress said it is like this (x) pizza, but without the cheese, and she was then corrected to the pizza that was wanted and with the additional topping (because it worked out cheaper). When the bill came, not only was there the ridiculous charge for the fizzy water we could not drink, but they had charged for the tap water! And then they had billed for the pizza with the cheese on. I paid, but then my friend who had the pizza challenged it after, and they eventually agreed to correct the pizza price. I did not mention the water to them.I want to review this place with 2.5 stars, 3 stars is too much, so I have to give it 2 stars. The food is good, but the staff seem miserable, unfriendly and dishonest (the former 2 are common in Germany, the latter not so much), which just makes it too uncomfortable for me to recommend or want to go back there. If you have to eat good food in this town then this may be your only option. Just be a bit more wary than you may normally be.
Ate here alone whilst away on business. This is not fine dining, but delicious, fresh, wholesome proper food. I had mozzarella to start and lasagne for main. Both were fresh, tasty and of generous proportions! The homemade bread was awesome!Service was great and tolerant of my poor German language skills!Would go back if in the area.
