Wasdale Head Inn - Seascale

I visited on November 10, 2023, and tried two different beers that were disappointing – they were flat, warm, and lacked flavor. Unfortunately, I felt unwell for two days afterward. I won't be returning.

After a few pints, we decided to order some food. You place your order at the counter, and your meals are then brought to your table. We chose a cozy spot by the fireplace, and I had the chickpea chili along with some onion rings. The dish was perfectly spiced, providing warmth on that chilly night. I would absolutely love to return during the day, as I've heard the views are spectacular. A trip back is definitely on my agenda!

I visited Ritson's Bar for dinner after an epic six-hour hike across the stunning yet daunting mountainous terrain between Wastwater and Ennerdale. I was quite taken with the unique design of the large wooden booths, which also helped minimize the chaos of chair movement. Naturally, we were starving and could only watch in frustration as half of our table's meals arrived and were devoured before ours even made it to the table. Given it was Bank Holiday Sunday, the place was buzzing with customers. When our food finally arrived, it was massive—I couldn't finish my dish because there was just so much scampi, including some impressively large pieces! It was excellent. The fish and chips were also a hit; I was pleased to see that the fish seemed to be of high quality. The bartender recommended a particular ale on tap, which he said was outstanding. I opted for a delicious Virgin Mary, and it’s rare to find someone who spices it so well. Despite being the only pub in town, Ritson's impressively holds its own with a commitment to quality food and drink. It’s definitely worth a stop after your hike. Just as a heads up, if you're thinking about taking a shortcut down the scree to reach the pub, be prepared for one of the most challenging and exhilarating hours of your life, and there’s a decent chance of serious injury!

We have returned since the refurbishment and I can now add that the loos are clean and modern. The rest of the bar has not changed significantly. N.B. The Five Star rating is not an indication of Haute Cuisine but what the bar offers to all ages is absolutely the best of its type!
