We could expect the worst because of the location on the canal. This is not the case: two good-quality fisheries. Careful and friendly staff.

This is a simple, unpretentious place that has good seafood prepared with a North African twist. Service is attentive and friendly fish and shellfish are always fresh and prices are a bargain. It is away from the madding crowd in Sete, and the customers are mostly locals.

We visited for lunch two days in a row, having the fish dish of the day each time. Simply delicious. Not a fancy restaurant but the place to go for a good meal and excellent value for money. Friendly service.

We ended up at Restaurant du Port by accident on an August evening when Sete’s festival of Saint Louis was in full swing and the streets were teeming with people. As we went from restaurant to restaurant it turned out there was no food to be had in the centre without a reservation. In the Rue Pierre Sémard, where there are several good addresses, someone was using a spray can of paint right next to the outdoor seating of a restaurant, filling the street with toxic fumes! So we were happy to find an outdoor seat at the popular Restaurant du Port on Canal Latéral. It was also very busy and service was rather chaotic. A friendly man intently watching diners from the doorstep feemed to be a waiter but might as well have been a family member hanging around because he brought our menu and then left with a few children. We had a fish dish and kefta (halal meat balls). The kefta were surprisingly yummy but one of the fishes we were served was still raw inside and couldn’t be eaten. Much later a friendly waitress asked us if we wanted her to take it back to the kitchen to be baked. No, we didn’t. It was just one of those days. The food was cheap, the atmosphere was friendly and we had enjoyed watching time go buy while drinking cool rosé wine.
