Finishing our Lake Michigan circle tour heading towards Sheboygan, WI a brat was in our future. Al Al’s Steinhaus came up 1st in our search. Was meant to be, my travel companions name is Al German. Experience didn’t disappoint. Great brat, burger, drinks and atmosphere! Thanks to Steve the owner for history of the Steinhaus conversation! Is a definite stop.
On a late September weekday, at about noon, I walked into Al Al's, grabbed a seat at the bar, and had one of the top 5 meals of my life. Nothing fancy at all: a double bratwurst sandwich with a side of what I later understood to be homemade sauerkraut, washed down with a mug of Pauline Oktoberfest. But everything was perfect: the brats, the buns, the kraut... even the beer, which was at just the right cool-but-not-icy temperature. The proprietors were chilling at the tables outside when I left, so I thanked them, then asked about the brats. They directed me a block or so away to Brockman's Market. There, they loaded me up with five dozen bratwursts. Frozen, so they'd survive the 12-hour drive home.
I love the atmosphere here. They offer a great Friday night fish fry and smoked BBQ ribs that are fantastic! I'm picky about fish and ribs so when I say they're fantastic I mean it. Prices are about what we're currently seeing anywhere right now for food. The drinks we a little pricey. The staff were amazing and very interactive with nice conversation.
It was average. We were looking forward to trying somewhere new for German food, since all the places we usually visit are now closed. There were many dishes we were looking forward to trying that were not available.
