One goes away hungry for a brief 1.5. The tea was good, however the water wasn't hot enough. There was a time they had a display of tea in the lobby and they told you about the tea and you basically picked it out there. This four small servings of loose tea for three people and no explanation. The atmosphere is good and although I understand the cost as it does include for visit, the tea is missing something. Johnsons cafe is tiny, very close sitting and when we were in there,no one was available to order. Nice and quaint.
The high tea event was VERY well done. Attended with my sister and daughter. Very period authentic and generous in all the taste treats. However the Mother's Day brunch was rather disappointing in the small selection of foods and the condition of the buffet over the serving period.
We had never been to Fort Edmonton Park - nor did we know of the Selkirk Hotel. I heard about the new Years Eve Dinner while listening to the Friday night blues party on CKUA. It definitely was not a mistake. Food and service were outstanding
We enjoyed the osso bucco and the venison. Both were very well prepared. The service was attentive and the wine reasonably good. While I said supper is a must, I would give a pass on breakfast. The service was very slow, the waitress had to be reminded to bring more coffee, the Selkirk omelette was mediocre and we were there almost an hour when we should have been in and out much quicker. The restaurant was not busy in the least.
After reviewing the menu online prior to our visit, I was looking forward to eating here. It was a huge let down. My husband ordered fish and chips, which came out of the kitchen with an eight inch hair across them. My order (portabella burger w/ sweet potato fries) came out incorrect and our server promptly noticed and sent it back to the kitchen as well. My five year old son had chosen an individual pizza off the kids menu, unfortunately it was about four inches in diameter when it arrived (it never said on the menu it'd be so tiny so I was expecting 6-8 inches). It was not enough food to feed a 5 yr old and not what I'd expect for a children's order. Anyways, once my correct order arrived I started to eat while my husband waited for his. The portobello burger immediately started dripping out tons of balsamic vinegar. Since I don't like to complain, I tried to drain it off thinking it was just a bit of extra, but it just kept coming out. It completely soaked up the bun and every bite I took my mouth burned with the taste of vinegar. I didn't finish it. The server asked us how everything was and I told her flat out it was horrible. Once we were done and I asked for the bill our server ended up going and getting the supervisor, who came over and asked what went wrong with our meal. She nicely said she'd talk to the kitchen and comp our meals which was great, but the meal itself was still a huge disappointment in our trip and in our day. Definitely not worth the price for what you're paying to begin with, but throw in hair, crappy food, screwed up orders and tiny kid's portion sizes and it's definitely a place to avoid.
