Contribuisci feedbackWith a night planned in Sidney my partner and I decided to try a new to us restaurant. As we both love Thai food through our many travels to Thailand we were very excited to find a restaurant that we hadn't tried before. I fell in love with Khao Soi in Chiang Mai and haven't found the dish anywhere in the west of Canada so I was overjoyed to read about it online before we went. We arrived at the restaurant and were immediately greeted by a kind woman who showed us to our table. The decor is lovely and we enjoyed the artwork while waiting for our first course. We order fresh summer rolls to start. After a short while they were brought out with apologies for the wait (was not long at all) and we were told that they make the rolls fresh to order. They were served with a green dipping sauce that blew us away! It was unique, light and flavourful, it paired so well with the rolls. They were fresh, the shrimp was still warm from being cooked and it was the first time outside of Asia that we found fresh mint in the rolls ... THANK YOU. It makes the whole summer roll experience to have mint :) We mentioned to each other that we will be back for rolls again and again. Our next course was papaya salad and they spiced the heat perfectly! The papaya was fresh and crisp, the prawns were juicy and large and the cashews were a welcome and lovely change from the regular peanuts. 2 for 2. best rolls and papaya salad we have experienced here. Our last dish was Khao Soi and it was beautiful. The crisp noodles were a familiar touch and the version they serve has soft noodles in the broth. nice! The whole meal we were met with perfect service and kind warm smiles. We have found a new favourite Thai restaurant and will be back very soon.
My wife suggested we eat out given neither of us felt like cooking so the usual question came up as to where? Not to say that our usual haunts are not good but sometimes you have had enough of the same old, same old and she had heard about a little Thai restaurant north of the business district in Sidney so why not try something new for a change. We looked for the place on at it address on Resthaven Drive and thought we had missed it only one find it is in a small commercial centre and faces on Malaview at the very back of the complex. The entrance is charming, the server was very pleasant and the place was quiet unlike Sidney's best known Thai restaurant. What we weren't expecting was the quality of the dishes which were a good size and superbly prepared - vegetables perfectly cooked and cod and prawn and fish dishes that top any Thai meal I have had anywhere on Vancouver Island. Once more the prices were more than reasonable especially given the quality. Why this restaurants is not ranked in the top ten in all of Sidney is quite beyond us. For our money, it is a far better choice than two better known Thai restaurants elsewhere in Sidney and for certain we will be back again soon.If you really like Thai food, give the Chon Tong a try and I know you will enjoy it.
We found our first choice for lunch was closed for the holidays so we went to Chon Tong and are so glad we did. What a great find. We each had the three items $(8.99) lunch trying different choices to compare, Spring Rolls and Deep Fried Tofu to start, then Hot
A small restaurant with excellent menu choices and delicious Thai food. The staff are extremely friendly. We would have preferred to have the dishes come closer together, as we like to mix our tastes as we eat, but they were quite busy and as a result we received each dish quite apart from each other. Prices are relative to other Thai restaurants, but they do have lunch and dinner combos and those prices seemed very reasonable. There is also a choice of beverages, including beers, ciders and wine. The restaurant is open from 11:00-9:30pm and they offer free delivery to the Sidney/North Saanich areas from 5:30-8:30pm. Closed on Tuesday. We ordered the Chon Tong Pad Thai, which was wonderful; the Chicken Red Curry; Chicken Larb; and Jasmine Rice. Medium flavour was just on the edge of being too hot for us, but good to know for next time - we will just order mild/medium. This will definitely return for more meals at Chon Tong and highly recommend that you give it a try.
I decided to try another Thai Restaurant tonight and talk about disappointed. The food was expensive and although I asked for very mild, duck curry, it was, as has been the case when I order mild curry at most Thai restaurants, way too spicy for my palate.Last Saturday a friend and myself dined here. it was my first actual dine in experience. I usually order the lunch special (Ummmm) or the Tom Kha Gai soup to go. We started with a large Tom Kha Gai Soup which is the best I have ever eaten here or in Winnipeg where I come from. Now the next delectable dish was Prawns Chu Chee. Oh MY; the succulent prawns, perfectly done (and I do mean perfect) with an amazing red curry that was perfectly spiced to my liking. I was in gastronomic heaven! The pad Thai was very good as well. Their Chon Tong Pad Thai is also superb. We also had two Vietnamese iced coffees and the entire bill was only $44. The substandard , similar food I ordered tonight from an unmentionable Thai restaurant (No it was not Sabu Thai) was $46. with no iced coffees. For excellent Thai Food, GO ONLY to Chon Thai Restaurant and pass on the rest.My previous review gets into more elaborate descriptions
