They sell everything including awesome japanese snacks and even korean and taiwanese snacks : Best part is visiting Meidi-ya after 7pm when they start to throw discounted price tags on their bento/ready to eat meals. Bought an oyako don for just $4. : tomorrow's lunch for sure. Most of these food can be kept in the fridge overnight and re-heated the next morning. Their sashimi is also super fresh and I was delighted to see another japanese chef from a japanese restaurant, ordering shashimi over the counter right here. lol. :
This is the supermarket of my dreams. The girlfriend cooked up a four course japanese meal for the fam a couple weeks ago, and she picked up everything she needed here, including some tofu they made on premises. THEY MAKE THEIR OWN TOFU HERE. And soya bean milk. Oh, mother of soy products. On our previous visits, we've also picked up frozen baby eggplant, some super wagyu for shabu shabu, and a bunch of ridiculously cool sweets. This one time, at band ca what I meant was, we found this seasonal fruit jelly, that was THE BOMB. I did cost a pretty penny, but it WAS THE BOMB. We got the peach jelly (that had half a peach in it), the grape (with a half dozen skinned grapes in it) and a couple more that were just a dream... Just go. You'll find something to gawk at, and you'll buy it, and you'll marvel at how amazing it tasted. And you'll write a review like mine.
This is a fantastic Japanese Supermarket. You know you can find all the great stuff you need here and it's pretty well priced. Most of it. Prepackaged and other curious Japanese things are all abound. But check the price...because there are some crazy things here. For example. See that Cantaloupe? It's perfect. It's a perfect sphere. Scientists at NASA could use it to calibrate their instruments. It was just flown in from Japan yesterday and it will set you back 136 SGD. It's just a melon...just a perfect one. Next to it are two tiny tomatoes that look fantastic...thats a more reasonable 15 bucks. Ok...so some of it is actually reasonably priced but still expensive. The 45 bucks for real Japanese Wagyu for example. Aside from that, it's worth the trip and shopping here if you need some Japanese cooking goodies...either the pedestrian or elite variety.
The supermarket with a TV area where kids can sit on a square mat and watch animations, how KAWAII! The kids were very quiet without adult supervision too, I wonder if it's the Japanese culture miracle or that television has taken over the next generation. This supermarket is interesting to spend time at. There's what I call the TOFU-WATERFALL. It's just three levels of glass tanks stacked on top of each other containing TOFU. And ice water flows from the top row to the last row, very fun to watch, calming even. There's a section selling salads and ready-packed bentos at affordable prices, and they look delicious too. What stands out is the huge variety of Japanese snacks and sauces that you won't see in other supermarkets. Meidi-ya is also famous for their original fruit jams. Generally the prices are not cheap, especially for fruits (imported), buy what you really want, if not, browsing is just as satisfying.
I love going to supermarkets and browsing around for 1 to 2 hours. Yes, 2 hours. I love browsing through products, prices, ingredients, packaging, you name it. This place was a treat to browse through. I found some very familiar products that sell all over Singapore and of course Japanese products. I was a bit disappointed at the rice selection though. I have been on the hunt for a particular kind of rice that I ate at a tonkatsu restaurant and I was so sure that I would be able to find it here, but I didn't. In fact, the rice selection here was just like any other rice section at your local NTUC. The prices were also very steep, and steeper still for the very same products you can get at NTUC. I think it might be a mix of the area (Clarke Quay) and the fact that it's a specialized supermarket. I can tell you this, I WON'T be buying that $136 honeydew melon I saw! I hope that melon has seeds made of pure gold so that I can pawn that off and get my money back. Anyways, steer clear of the fruits and vegetables section here. It's definitely much pricier than Fair Price or Cold Storage and lack luster in terms of variety of produce. I saw a few interesting things here that I can't find at any other supermarket here. Ok, I love espresso. HEY! I'm Italian/Ecuadorian, it's in my blood! I noticed Singapore loves their instant coffee, already pre mixed with cream and sugar. I'm not really used to it since it's also not even espresso, but this supermarket carries instant espresso WITHOUT sugar. They carry a few varieties and brands. The frozen Japanese desserts section is also really worth the purchase. And of course, all the awesome Japanese condiments.
