We arrived at 11:58, but a woman came to the door to tell us they wouldn't be open until 12:00. She couldn't let us in because her boss wasn't there yet. We decided to wait in the car. The owner showed up 5 minutes late. I went back to ask the woman if the boss was ready to cook. She said he still had prep work to do, maybe another 30 minutes. When a restaurant says it will be open at a certain time, it should be ready to serve customers. We have enjoyed eating here in the past, but this kind of lack of preparation is a sure way to lose customers.
Sooke Bistro Sushi Bar Restaurant, formerly known as May's and the Beach House, has fantastic new owners and sushi masters. During isolation, we found that their fresh sushi takeout was the highlight of our meals. Our go-to favorites for two include the Wor Wonton Soup, 2 orders of Mixed Tempura, 1 Cali Crunch roll, and 1 Coast Sushi roll. Being out of town, we appreciate being able to pick up our meal and enjoy it at home. The tempura crisps up nicely in the toaster oven, the soup is easily reheated in the microwave, and the sushi tastes delicious on our own homemade Wabi Sabi Sushi product sets. We were relieved to hear that despite a "FOR SALE" sign going up, the restaurant will not be moving as they have a tenant for the next few years. Sooke Bistro truly offers one of the best takeout options to enjoy a delicious meal in the comfort of your own home. Thank you, Basil, Glenys, Marshall, and Inman!
We had a fantastic experience ordering a custom sushi dinner at this restaurant. The chef came out to offer suggestions, and we were pleased with the service and the quality of the sushi. We will definitely be returning.
The place looks like nothing from the outside, but it is beautiful, spacious and sunny inside! (including an old fireplace that practically comes in the cooler months of the year staff was friendly and responsive. The food is a mix of Japanese, Thai and modern Americans who keep everyone happy. I had an excellent pad Thai, while the rest of the family gorgte on super-fresh sashimi (with real crab meat! We'd stop here again!
3 of us went here for lunch when Happy's was closed for holidays and I tried the ling cod fish and chips. It was a huge piece of fish coated in a crunchy coating, nice and crisp and tender fish, good coleslaw and tarter sauce....My Dad had the ginger beef, not bad but could have used more sauce. My hubby had a burger and he quite liked it, it had onion rings and cheese and we both liked the fries. lightly battered fries and probably frozen but cooked well and nice and hot. They seem to have painted and spruced the place up, I don't know why it isn't busier. Service was attentive and polite, we will be back.
