It is situated along the side of a lane amongst the trees, giving a warm, cosy feel. The menu is typical Ticinese with a board of daily specials, wine list offered a good choice of Ticinese and Italian wines. We would definitely visit again as the food was very good, simple flavours done extremely well.
Four of us booked Sunday lunch, having been previously a few months ago. The restaurant was full, however our table had been given away and we were placed right at the entrance, by the kitchen entrance on one side and the waiter's station on the other. Despite our vicinity to the waiter's station, it took about 20 minutes before we received our meanies. There were no specials of the day, which have previously been very good. Overall, this was the most disappointing visit. It might have been a bad day, or perhaps the restaurant has taken a downturn. Previously, I would have given it a "very good" rating.
In the mountains around Lago di Lugano (and Como, to a lesser extent) there are grottos, which are deep holes into the earth, that have 60-ish degree air coming out. This makes a refreshing atmosphere in summer, when a few local restaurants operate around the grotto openings. (In the winter, the air is still the same temperature, so it feels warm.) A lot of grottos have been used as wine cellars for centuries, because of their constant, complimentary temperatures. This grotto is a favorite with locals, they serve only the types of food locals eat. Excellent quality food, Well prepared from traditional recipes. But a limited menu. It's about five minutes from the city by car. Plenty of free parking. Communal seating at long tables. Fair prices.
Grotto Figini is an absolute gem! We chose it for the celebration of our anniversary and had an amazing dinner there. The place is on the outskirts of a beautiful forest. We enjoyed the game meats! The staff was hospitable and spoke very good English as well. : Highly recommended!
Cute area of Lugano, with some original grotto style restaurants (though they have since expanded from their grotto origins and the dining area isn 't actually in a grotto . Had some fresh pasta with a creamy topping, and wife had some even tastier pasta with pesto (can 't remember all the names! But among our party of eight, four people had the beef ribs 'costine ' which were made in an open fire grill. My aunt let me try a piece man, I should have ordered them, they were amazing!
