We had to wait a long time to be served and the waitress seemed more interested in chatting with patrons at the bar than taking our order for a table of 10. The food was overly salty and the steak pie was particularly disappointing. All the meals seemed to be standard or frozen style food. The restaurant appeared run down and gloomy. We regretted relying on TripAdvisor reviews for this visit and recommend going to The Pheasant Inn in nearby Allithwaite instead, which offers delicious food and fantastic service.
We decided to try this restaurant without a reservation and they were able to accommodate us. The food was excellent - I ordered the roast chicken Sunday dinner and it came with a generous portion of half a chicken. My husband had the beef and said it was melt-in-your-mouth delicious. He even had to help me finish my chicken because it was so much food. We will definitely be returning, but next time we will make a reservation. Kudos to the chef and staff for a great experience.
On Thursday, the 4th of the month, we were looking for a last-minute place to eat and decided to try The Rose Crown. The friendly lady there kindly allowed us to dine in. Oh my goodness, the food was delicious, beautifully presented, and we all loved it. To be honest, it didn't cost as much as I had anticipated, coming to around £130 for the six of us. The staff were incredibly attentive and went above and beyond to ensure we had a great dining experience. They were friendly and chatty until our food arrived, then they allowed us to enjoy our meal in peace.
My family popped in late afternoon on a Sunday as we were staying in the area in the hope for a meal. We hadn’t booked but thought we would try anyway. There were a couple of tables awaiting food and lots of empty tables. As we approached the bar the lady asked if we were there for food and when we said yes she said well we aren’t taking any more orders as we are struggling with what we have got. No smile, no offer of a proposed wait time, nothing. And with a 3 year old and 8 year old in tow, it didn’t go down well. Miserable atmosphere… so quiet. Won’t go back. How about next time saying something like we are quite busy at the moment and there is 60 minute wait etc… ended up at the engine room down the road and whilst it was very quiet and the bar guy seemed quite shy, the food was prompt and lovely!
We were the only people in there and the landlord and landlady just sat at the bar on their iPad. Felt like an inconvenience rather than customers. No music and absolutely no atmosphere. Would avoid this place at all costs.
