This place is like a New York greasy spoon but without the grease. It's located beside the traffic courts so it's handy for a quick bite when you're in paying your tickets. A lot of the cops eat there as well and the two brothers...More
When I say "Greasy Spoon" I do not mean it in a negative way. But this is how I would describe this little family run restaurant that has been here for years. The downtown businesses rely on the Cool Moose Cafe for their coffee breaks and lunches. I've seen many lawyers and other professionals standing in line here for take out. Their salads are great with lots of fresh veggies, whether its their chicken caesar salad, julienne or greek - they're all great! You can always rely on their soup of the day. They have other daily specials like perogies, cabbage rolls, fish and chips and many others. Prices are reasonable. Cool Moose is conveniently located in the downtown heart of St Catharines across from Corblock. And although it's a greasy spoon, I'd definitely recommend it for coffee, breakfast and lunch. This is definitely an "excellent" restaurant, however, it is a small family-owned diner. The bacon is delicious, the omelettes are fantastic, and the portions are generous. Unfortunately, the air conditioner does leak and the regular customers are familiar with each other and the staff and enjoy chatting. If this atmosphere is not your preference, then this might not be the right place for you. Nonetheless, you would be missing out on a disappearing type of dining experience.
Upon entering the restaurant, we noticed that the air conditioner above the door was leaking so heavily that it resembled rain, causing water to cover the floor. The establishment appeared to be quite dilapidated, with clean tables but dirty chairs. I ordered a soda, which came in a dirty can. After wiping it off with a napkin, I transferred the soda to a paper cup to avoid touching the can with my mouth. The hamburger and club sandwich I ordered were tasty, but the fries and chicken fingers were unappetizing, possibly due to rancid fryer oil. Additionally, the restaurant only accepted cash as payment, not debit. Despite the friendly staff, the overall experience was not up to par.
