Le Routier Restaurant - St-Pierre-Jolys

June 4, 2023 So, following our excellent road trip to Selkirk for Sunday Dinner on May 28th, we made a decision that we will take a drive to rural Manitoba every Saturday or Sunday through the months of June, July and August. That will provide us with 13 road trips around the province and the opportunity to meet friendly Manitobans and enjoy some fine cuisine…we hope. The only rule, no burger, chicken or pizza joints. Only “adult type” dinner food. My wife and I will be the observers and experimenters of these restaurants and their offerings…my words are designed to compliment and provide constructive feedback to the proprietors and their staff. Please accept them as just that…our views. We drove out to St. Pierre Joly from Winnipeg, along Highway 59...a moody Manitoba afternoon with intermittent rain but no sunshine. It was good to see some of the fields starting to bud out. Arrived at Le Routier Restaurant about 5:00 p.m. for Sunday dinner. Dining room was empty...we were seated immediately in the dining room. The Decor – the exterior needs work, especially around the entrance way and front of the building. It is worn out and not appealing as you pull up and enter the building. There is a main entrance and walk up side window for pick up orders and ice cream. There were weeds growing all along the building and the picnic benches need some work. Concrete entrance was crumbling and flaking with loose concrete underfoot. The interior is eclectic with mostly long tables laid out for 8 diners. Room seemed clean enough. Washrooms were clean. The Staff Service – the owner and waitress were friendly. It was hard to understand his English but we managed to place our order with him. Service was prompt although it took four requests to get two glasses of water. The Menu – is a mixture of Chinese on one page, Canadian on a second page and a short breakfast page. Pricing across the menu seemed quite reasonable. The Food A chicken rice soup and small wonton soup were hot and delicious. A Denver was tasty but the only option was white bread…no other choices. I had the hot chicken sandwich with fries and gravy on the side. I questioned the owner about whether the chicken was deli slices or baked chicken…he assured me it was baked chicken. Again, only white bread. The fries were hot and delicious. Unfortunately the chicken and gravy were almost inedible. There was no hint of chicken flavor in either one of them. The Price at $42.61 with beverages, taxes and small tip was too much for this meal. Generally, I will say that we were disappointed with the meal and would not return. All in all, we enjoyed the drive out and the drive around St. Pierre Joly – we drove back into the city through Niverville and along the Red River. A lovely 4 hour round trip.

Tried to go here with my girls. There wa dithers eating ice cream outside. I asked do I have to go in to order and they said we just went to the window. So we saw a buzzer to ring. We rang it. Once. Twice. 6 times. Knocked in the glass. Two guys in there. Once looked over and gave a hand gesture. But no one came. I had 3 kids crying their eyes out cause they couldn’t get ice cream. If you are too busy but a closed sign up. One idea si you don’t get a bad review and you won’t waste my time and make children cry.

Arrived at 10:30 got menus at 10:40 ordered at 10:50 finally started getting food at 11 :40 and one order was wrong the other was over cooked sent it back and i cancelled my order. When it came time to pay they wanted me to pay for the meal i did not get.

Use to stop in here all the time either just passing by to head to st malo or made a special trip here for the food HOWEVER new owners here are on the cheap side and food not so good anymore,Burgers bland,buns are cheap grocery store buns, poutine smaller portions and not on the great scale no more.Coffee weak, Ice cream still good and gets the stars for here now.I use to have this rated 5 star place with nothing but great things to say

We were passing through St.Pierre and stopped for a quick burger and fries. Sadly disappointing burgers; the meat was bland, the onions were raw and very sparse on the burgers, and the condiments were all together in a small blob in the middle of the burgers, not spread out so you get some in every bite.The burger patties were home-made, and not factory frozen, what a nice change from most restaurants! The patties could have been so much better with a little salt and pepper mixed in; a good dollop of grilled onions and the condiments spread out over the whole burger. The fries were excellent! Make sure you get salt and pepper with them!
