In her lack of competency, I had to speak to the chef ; however, his english wasn't that great, so I felt it was pointless....the meal was the worse presented. I'm no sushi chef, however I know I would have done better even on my worst day ! I would have rated this restaurant zero stars if I could. Thanks Umai for taking the wooden spoon (connotation in Australian English for coming last in the race!)
Had lunch here yesterday with a friend. He ordered a glass of ice tea and a glass of water, she looked at me and I said 'Make it two please'. I guess that was confusing and not very clear. He got his two beverages, I got a glass of water. After 25 mins of waiting she wandered by to take our order and had very limited knowledge of what she could do for substituting items. When the order was finally placed it arrived fairly quickly. I asked for another bowl of wasabi and pickled ginger, we got the bowl but it was empty. No worries though, I can find better service elsewhere.
On more than one occasion wait time has been long. But today, a promised 50min wait was a 2hr delay. This will be our last attempt. Sorry Umai. you disappointed.
This used to be my favourite sushi restaurant but a recent visit has found the food and service to seriously have gone way down hill. Only one other table occupied at lunch time and it was so cold, I had to wear my coat throughout my meal.Very mediocre food.
We used to eat at Umai Sushi frequently when it opened about a decade ago. There was usually a lineup of people waiting to get a table. Now, it seems that the standard has dropped, and this is unfortunate. When we ate their last week there were only three tables occupied. My partner ordered the Teriyaki chicken, and it was very poorly presented. The greens and veges were overcooked and almost looked like they had come from another customer's uneaten plate. The chicken pieces seemed to have been ripped apart, instead of being neatly sliced and arranged like they used to do this dish. I ordered sashimi dinner and was also disappointed. Thus used to come very nicely presented on a large decorative plate, on a bed of lettuce, greens and ice. One usually got a selection of several different types of sashimi, all artfully arranged and presented. This time, all I got were 16 pieces of raw fish; 10 salmon, 3 tuna and 3 white fish. They were not even neatly sliced. I had to ask for a knife so that I could try to make sashimi slices for myself. And they were simply placed on a plain white tray. The decor has also deteriorated. Our table was uneven and wobbled unstably. This is unfortunate. Sudbury does not have many good restaurants, and Umai used to be one of them. No longer, I'm afraid.
