Gillies - Sunderland

I recently visited this restaurant for their jacket potatoes and I was not disappointed. The service was great and very pleasant. The jacket potatoes were freshly cooked and on the larger side, and they were brought to our table promptly. There was a variety of toppings to choose from, and we went with the tuna mayonnaise and garlic chicken. They were served with a simple but fresh side salad of iceberg lettuce, tomato, and cucumber. The toppings had a generous amount of mayo. At £5.75 each, they were a great value for the quality. I also enjoyed a nice Americano coffee with hot milk. Overall, it was a fantastic lunch stop. My wife and I stopped by the restaurant today and ordered mince and dumplings, peas and chips, and pie and chips, along with tea and a small coke. The total came to £18.60. Unfortunately, we were very disappointed with the food. The dumpling was hard as a rock, the mince was bland and low-quality, and the pie seemed like it had been reheated multiple times. For the price we paid, we expected much better quality. Needless to say, we will not be returning to this restaurant.

So having selected which dirty table to sit at we removed dirty plates and cutlery to a smaller table and waited in the queue. My father in law ordered first and ordered cheese sandwiches for our girls. When he came back I ordered for us. Woman behind got served first as lady “didn’t see me”. Hard to see a 16 stone 6 foot 2 guy who was first in line!!! Wife waited 20 mins for a cheese and onion toastie and I got my “panini” slightly after. We were then accosted by a waitress who asked us if we paid for the cheese sandwiches and when I showed her the criminal £24.80 receipt she points to the manager and says “he made me come over and do the dirty work”. Seriously... no organisation, shouting ticket numbers and “WHO ORDERED CHIPS” across packed tables. Shambles.

Called in for lunch, great to see traditional , homecooked meals on menu. Staff very friendly and polite, great service, great food and value for money. It was good to see my mam enjoy a meal out for a change. Will definitely be back again.
