That's an old favorite. now a family-run restaurant of generation. we haven't been for a few years and can see changes in the menu. we ordered the roti canai and the sauce (which we love), the pumpkin rolls (which were delicious) and the original Malaya-curry (which was delicious but very hot). we love the roti here. incredibly busy. my helpful note: book them to avoid that they miss. total bill for the mentioned x meal, x glasses wein, x beer and an extra roti was so, not cheap but delicious.
We loved the malaya, but were not restricted for a few years, especially with covid. with the reopening we were looking forward to a great meal. Unfortunately it wasn't. not only has the malaya reduced the menu to a third... from what it was, there was no bark dishes, especially only meeresfruit (prawns) huhn. but at worst, they no longer offer their amazing Satay skewers. the food felt rushed because the service was likely too efficient; it was something like being on a production line. the meal for four people was expensive, but I went a bit hungry because many of the dishes had chili were hotter than usual and to round it off, cost one of the cheaper red wines (pronounced according to all standards). overall it was a disappointing experience. I'm sorry to say that, but we're not going back. unless the menu takes off and the Satay sticks return!
I'm a long-time fan of the malaya. I have been regularly since the beginning of the time when the restaurant was a great favorite in its north sydney location. I'm just back after the covid broke through a few years. in the run of the years the restaurant has gradually eliminated the popular menu points. the total menu is much less populated than years ago. there are now very few meat dishes and no lamb options at all. what is still quite good, but still expensive. but if they are willing to go to the malaya, money is not a problem for them. Anyway, they took the Satay sticks from the menu now. they have been there for decades and are or were a restaurant specialty. it was so popular, they even sold the sauce. no more. something happened to the roasted rice. Previously it was delicious, but is now quite bland. many of the dishes garnishes, especially dinge like their delicious snow, were also cut. I know that others have praised the sorts, but they must not know what was previously available. as always, the waiting staff can't be guilty. they are polite, professional, efficient and attentive. the restaurant is stylish and well furnished. if they don't mind paying for a bottle of wine, then they will be satisfied with the choice. since the move to darling harbour, the malaya was more and more of an experience than a restaurant. I think they have become a bit too elite and unfortunately the progressive kulling of the menu, including removing all my favorites, means that I now cut them off. I will keep the menu online in the eye and if you return the sorts, I will be back.
