Sommerset Cafe - Topeka

The food and service at this restaurant were outstanding. We tried the chicken fried steak breakfast and pancakes, which were both perfect. It's rare to find a place that excels in both service and food, but this restaurant definitely does.

I'm not convinced that it was worth the trip. The service was slow, the food was just okay, and there was no ambiance.

Despite being located in an older building, the restaurant was able to keep the room cool with multiple ceiling fans running. The walls were decorated with old photos and news clippings, giving the place a cozy vibe. During peak hours, the restaurant can get busy and you may end up sitting at a booth, which could use some extra cushioning for comfort. The service from the young staff varied, with some being attentive while others seemed disinterested. The owner, who also serves as the sole cook, seemed overwhelmed with the workload, leading to some quality control issues. On two separate visits, there were issues with under-cooked breakfast potatoes and skimpy pie portions for the high prices charged. The overall portion sizes felt smaller than expected for the cost, with dishes like the $15 chicken fried steak breakfast lacking in size. Despite the nice drive out from Topeka, the poor service, inconsistent quality, and small portions made it feel like the experience wasn't worth the time and money spent. Given the issues faced during the visits, it didn't seem fair to be charged the full amount, especially considering the high price of the pie.

Classic dining experience, whether it be lunch or dinner!

It's like taking a step back in time. Made from scratch everything plus hand shredded hash browns. The service was friendly and quick, the food was exceptional. Give them a try!
