Well, after mopping up the sauce in my beef madras, I can tell you that the sauce wasn't glistening with oily globules like most indian restaurants I eat from. Don't be fooled though - you don't sacrifice fat for flavour at this place. Tender pieces of beef in a thick stew like sauce for the Beef Madras. Big and plentiful pieces of paneer in the saag paneer. The thali plate isn't for the faint of heart - rice plus 2 dishes plus coleslaw, naan, and a drink. I keep saying I will try other things there but the beef and the saag paneer keep drawing me back in. The samosas are baked and, while good, are lacking in the oily crispiness of a fried samosa. Those curries though are a thing of beauty.I prefer to do takeout as the sitting area is small and is often too warm for my taste.
Very close to the Toronto Reference Library - great for students looking for a quick bite. They serve 'baked, not fried' samosas, but individually and for catering in amounts such as $0.50 per piece. Really know their clientele. Have been around for at least 5 years - reliable food.
This restaurant is one of the top brunch spots in the area, offering delicious food, drinks, excellent service, and a lovely atmosphere.
I am unsure if Mildred's is truly subpar or if my high expectations due to Toronto hype led to disappointment. In any case, I would rate it as 2.5 stars.
I had been eager to try this restaurant for a while, and I'm glad I finally did. I went with some friends.
