Was also put off by people in massage place opposite constantly coming out into the lane and standing and staring. As a single woman I felt uncomfortable with this. Might go back if I was with friends.
Sumesh did an amazing job building up Alans Cafe in Kovalam over the years to become a fantastic restaurant with great food, service and ambience. Sumesh moved on in November 2018 to a lovely restaurant in Varkala called White Rabbit and this is another superb place to eat. I have left a review. The restaurant was run from November 2018 to around March 2019 with a different chef, different owner and different manager. Alan Cafe reopened in November 2019 as Banana Leaf Kovalam. It is still a vegetarian restaurant and open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The manager is former waiter Rahul and Shibu the old chef is back too. Food is possibly the best vegetarian food in Kovalam, the restaurant is very welcoming and service and decor are great. I have been eating here for some years now and can't wait to visit again in January 2020!
Last year, our experience at this restaurant was disappointing due to the long wait. However, when we found ourselves in the area in the late afternoon, we decided to give it another chance for an early dinner. The menu hadn't changed and the prices remained consistent. We started with Kerala papads and lemon ginger soda, which had a nice kick from the ginger. Our main dishes included bhindi masala, tarka dhal, mixed raita, and Kerala parathas. The food arrived quickly this time as there were no other guests at the time. Everything tasted delicious and the quality was just as we remembered. The total bill, including a tip, came to INR750 which we found reasonable. If you're in the area, it's definitely worth a visit. We didn't return this time as we discovered equally good and potentially more innovative vegetarian restaurants closer to our hotel.
I have been to Alan's for both lunch and breakfast. The food is delicious and they are able to make it very spicy just as I like it. It is also a budget-friendly option compared to the overpriced beachfront restaurants catering to tourists. Alan's is easy to locate, just look for the alley near Hotel Orion. There are two other vegetarian restaurants with signs in the same alley, but keep walking and you will find Alan's on the right. The woman who served me each time was lovely, friendly, and very helpful. I will definitely be returning many times during my stay in Kovalam for the next few weeks.
I visited this place with my family for our dinner.Tasty vegetarian food items. It is a good option for vegetarians.Food is worth for cash. The workers are very customer friendly.
