I ordered the guacamole, carnitas taco and chicken tinga taco. the guacamole needed salt. it was very spoiled. the blandness continued with the carnitas and chicken tinga. the flesh was not only dirty, but watery?! I ordered the maistortillas on the tacos and they came out cold. (just fyi must heat/great maistortillas. with the soggy meat my tacos fell apart. at this point I didn't want to try to eat them. lower line, if you want a great street tac, you won't find it here. I would recommend cantina in uptown.
I certainly heard mixed reviews prior to my visit to Mexicali Blues. I came in mid afternoon on a Saturday. The hostess greeted me as I entered. I advised her that I was just going to grab a seat at the bar. It wasn't crowded at all. The bartender was spot on. He took my drink order and gave me a food menu. Good customer service throughout! I wasn't really hungry. I ordered some chips and queso just to try something. The chips were warm and crispy. The queso had a nice flavor. It was the perfect light snack with a margarita. The tropical frozen margarita was extremely refreshing and perfect! I even got a brain freeze ... it was great! Mexicali Blues definitely screams upscale Mexican restaurant. I enjoyed my visit and I plan to return soon!
They processed about 5 to go orders that were ordered wayyyy after my meal. Very upset. Manager didn’t show any empathy or offer anything for my inconvenience. Will never come back. Unfortunately the food is pretty good if you don’t have this experience
RESTAURANT REVIEW THE SPOT Mexicali Blues 215 Bell Wy Trussville, AL 35173 My sister and I went to the entertainment district in Trussville for her birthday and tried some Mexican food! It 's a family friendly environment with tons of seating. Food Chips and Salsa Queso Strawberry, Blueberry, Watermelon, Lime Margs Fish, Shrimp, Steak Tacos Crispy Chicken Sliders Mexican Rice Loaded Nachos Let 's talk about it!! First let me start by saying our waitress Karina was AMAZING!! She definitely understood the assignment. The chips and salsa was very fresh but it was the queso that did it for me! It was so rich and creamy. The margaritas are good but I wouldn 't recommend the watermelon flavor unless you just really love watermelon and love the real fruit juice taste. The strawberry, blueberry, and lime ones were good. The tacos were delicious and huge! They are very filling and you can honestly get by with ordering two of them. My favorite was the shrimp taco. Whewww! I don 't know what sauce they used on it but it was to die for. So delicious! It was giving sweet with a hint of spice. The fish taco also understood the assignment but you have to eat it there and not take it home. Leftover was a no go. The steak is the same. Eat it there. The crispy chicken sliders did what needed to be done. They came with guac on them which is a yuck moment for me if you know me but surprisingly, I enjoyed it. It came with Mexican rice and it was good. I would suggest pouring some queso on top of the rice. The loaded nachos with chicken were also good. You can 't really go wrong with nachos, right? Haha! Overall- I give Mexicalli a 8.5/10. The prices for the bar were pretty steep but it 's worth it. The food prices were pretty average, especially for the amount of food that you get. The atmosphere was great as well. Check them out and be sure to let me know what you think! Be sure to tell them #VictheCrit sent you!
Probably the only fully female managed restaurant on this side of town, Mexicali Blues offers a versatile and exceptional experience. With a diverse menu that can accommodate everything from the taco queen (try the KFC {Korean Fried Caulifower}, the Barbacoa or the Firecracker Shrimp) to the multi course foodie. Their sushi grade salmon with mango salsa, boneless pork chop brined in Bailey's Pineapple Chipotle Mexican Oregano, and their seafood fundido are some of the best dishes in town. Their margarita's are strong and the mixes are handmade on site. As if that isn't enough they have the best servers in Birmingham. Ask for Emma or Caleb and be ready to be amazed at their attention to detail. And when you leave, if everything has been just exactly perfect like we expect it will be, consider mashing that 30% button and showing your server (and the bartender and host and food runner that they split those tips with) that you appreciate the incredible experience all the way out in Trussville.
