It is a number of years since we last visited Black Rook Bakehouse. Located on East Hastings Street in Vancouver, I was always impressed by their hearty cakes and sweet cakes. Unfortunately, on this last visit in August, they were all made from savory pies instead, we home a Lemon Berry Muffin and a piece of Chester Cheesecake, which is a mixture between carrot cake and cheesecake. Layers of carrot cake with rum-soaked apricots, walnuts and pumpkin seeds sandwich a layer of New York cheese cake and the whole is covered with cream cheese icing. I wish we lived a little closer so we could come by more often.
Good fresh food made on the grounds. Friendly staff, too. A bit lacking in the decor department, but it has a nice local feeling. Worth a visit.
The Beef Brisket Pot Pie is truly the best in the West. Great gravy, tender beef and golden crust served with salad and potatoes. I skipped the potatoes and had dessert a chocolate stuffed croissant topped with chocolate sauce. Finish your meal with a cuppa Salt Spring Island Coffee.
Discovered this bakery and its wonderful staff on a walk exploring East Van.
