Delicious food with a unique atmosphere. An unpretentious location that focuses on food and service. If you’re looking for an upscale setting there is probably many other places in downtown Vancouver for you. But for great food and friendly service they deliver above and beyond. The 2 rice and 1 noodle bowl dishes we had were packed with flavour and a generous portion size.
Went there based on excellent reviews. Was shortly after lunch on a Thursday. No one was there, saw the one staff member cleaning in the back. She told me chef was gone to get groceries and would be back in about 15 mins. Was willing to wait, asked to see the menu. Was told they didn't have three of the items on a somewhat limited menu. So left. Should have put a closed sign up or something.
I was in the area and craving vegetarian Asian food, so I decided to try out Holy Chow. When I arrived, I noticed a note on the door apologizing for a delayed opening. Standing outside in the rain, I saw a neighboring building that turned out to be C'ow Aa housing. The people there kindly allowed me to wait inside until Holy Chow opened. Once inside, (apparently also known as Lucky Penny,) I ordered the Sesame Garlic Noodles with the help of a friendly server. The noodles and Oolong Iced Tea were delicious. A few other customers arrived and sat at the bar, with one person being quite loud and discussing controversial political topics. I hoped the server or bartender would calm him down, but it didn't happen. I later tried the vegan spring rolls, which were also tasty. As I paid my bill, I inquired about a dessert recommendation from what I assumed was the chef. The server was enthusiastic, but the chef seemed uninterested in engaging with me. Overall, the food and service were good, but the environment was a bit uncomfortable due to the loud customer and lack of interaction from the chef.
The food at this restaurant is consistently delicious with a wide variety of flavors to satisfy any craving. This was my first time dining inside the restaurant and I immediately felt comfortable and cozy. The Cocopuff drink I had was not only tasty but helped enhance the overall experience. I will definitely be returning to this restaurant again and again.
