The price and food quality are way better although still on the expensive side.<br/ <br/ The restaurant is very clean and medium-sized. It gets very busy on the weekend evenings so I would not recommend showing up without a reservation unless you have plenty of time to kill.<br/ <br/ My favourites here are the crabmeat fish maw soup, the 2-course peking duck, and live prawns pan fried in soy sauce which can be found at most cantonese restaurants. My favourite dishes that can only be found at Pelican are:<br/ <br/ Golden Yolk Live Crab: This is the live crab deep fried and then cooked with a sauce made from the yolk of salted duck eggs. If you like salted duck eggs, then this dish is a must try.<br/ <br/ Beef Ribs with Barbecue Sauce: This is sliced beef ribs stewed in a special brown sauce. The meat is very tender but it is the sauce that is amazing and very tasty.<br/ <br/ For dessert, their baked tapioca is also very good.<br/ <br/ I rate the service as incredible since they have lots of servers who change your plate and the tea pot is refilled within seconds after you tilt the lid. Food are always served in a timely manner as well.<br/ <br/ If you have never been to this place, you might want to give it a try for your next family gathering/dinner.
Great food but pricey. We stop here everytime we come to Vancouver. The food is excellent but a little pricey
Since they changed management, they have paid more attention to service. You still get the curt service typical of Chinese restaurants, but they at least try to accommodate much better than any other Chinese restaurant I 've been to in Vancouver. The food, though, is what keeps me coming back. If you order the soup, even 'small ' size comes out like in a bucket. Huge portion, so it 's great for family and big group for a casual meal. Ambience is not much to write home about, but it does have a rather homey feeling with the number of Chinese families eating here. Good place for casual, no fuss meal.
One of my new favorites. The Pelican is one of my new favorite places which I have been going to for about a year now. Last time I went there I took some Chinese co-workers for dinner and they were very impressed. For me I like the consistency and quality of the food, the good prices of the seafood, and especially the much better than average serving staff. I go there late night after midnight and the staff are just great. The spicy dungeness crab, seafood chow mein done Hong Kong style, with a vegetable dish is a very good combo. It is fine dining. And at 1am or later, a great option.
First time I TRULY enjoyed Chinese food. I never really had restaurant food in Vancouver being a Calgarian and all, but I can say this beats so many Chinese restaurants in Calgary. <br/ Needless to say, almost every food in Vancouver is better than Calgary, but I'm not going to leave it at that.<br/ <br/ The food are nicely seasoned, they're not oversalted nor are they littered with MSG that'll put you to sleep. That's the only reason why I can't stand Chinese food (in Calgary, they dump like an entire bag full of MSG in one meal, I swear! . I would just like to say great job on beating my prejudice of Chinese food. And I hope to come back and try the place again! (In the distant future sadly...
