Played here a few times this summer since I recently moved to Vassar and wanted to find a local course I liked. If the entire course was as well maintained as their greens are this would be a wonderful course to have close by, and a total 5 star gem. Unfortunately every time I played here over the summer I saw 0 course improvement between rounds, but I wanted to at least give it a chance instead of judging it off of one round. Here's my insight...if it has rained recently, the front 9 will be flooded...and I'm talking certain holes having 50% of the fairway underwater with other spots having turf that feels like a water bed when you walk over it. Even if you wait till the course dries out, the course gets covered with grass clippings and looks like a hay field with freshly downed hay...good luck finding a ball in there. The front nine could use some additional directional visual aids to help inexperienced players navigate between holes as well, because I felt like I was guessing on where I was going on some of the holes and did circles trying to figure out where the next tee box was on others. The only reason I gave it two stars is because the greens are top notch though and novice player friendly since they're basically flat or angled to one side or the other on average. They play soft but roll true and smooth. Once you're on the green you almost feel like you're on a resort feeling green because they roll that nice...then you come back to reality when get back into the cart. The staff has always been friendly, but you rarely see anyone working there so I'm assuming they're understaffed. You pretty much get what you pay for with this course but in my opinion, it's still over priced for the condition and layout it seems to always be in. A little TLC, grounds improvement, and minor tweaks here or there and this would be a course I'd be happy to pay 60-80 bucks an 18 for. Without changes though, this is a 36 dollar course at the most.
Understaffed and takes forever to get your meal. Also don't have an early tea time if you need any refreshments. Bar didn't open until 10 on a Sunday.
Good news! Management contacted our group. He explained the glitch and is working hard to insure they get things right for the future. My advice....... If you can, take the time and let them know while you're there. Four stars for being a stand up manager. What a difference a year makes. Our annual girls golf weekend included Vassar Golf Club last year. We couldn't wait to get back this year. How sad! Our food tasted OK but we might as well have dined separately. Apparently the cook can only prepare one meal at a time. First person was done eating by the time the last got her Sandwich. Did I mention there were only FIVE of us? There were only seven people in the whole place. The golf was nice.
I held a spur of the moment company golf outing for all my employees and they were more than accommodating. Everything was well planned for a short notice and the course was beautiful. Under management and the changes made were noticed. We will be back!
