Captain KooKoo Fish&Chips Grill

Went to Kookoos Kitchen, recently rebranded on a friends referral and boy was I surprised. I had the nutjob burger,2 patties with triple cheese, bacon and Montreal smoked meat. It was perfectly cooked and very juicy. I actually could barely fit it in my mouth, it was huge. The staff was great in their recommendations. I tried the bacon wrapped fries and those were excellent as well. Bottom line you need to try this place.

Overhyped and overpriced. I went here only because of all the reviews I read online. I think it was all their friends and family who have left the reviews. I called first to inquire about the menu, (no menu online or anywhere else.) I wanted to find out what was on the menu and the price ranges. They told me they are known for their fish and chips. I asked if it was big portions, he said yes. I asked some prices for burgers and fries as well as fish and chips. $16 for Halibut Fish and Chips I was told. They have specials on the burgers and I could see most of their menu on Instagram if I had that. I do not have Instagram I said. I asked a friend to look online and he said there is no menu, but lots of pictures. So off I went to try it. We got there and we were told that there was a special on the burgers, $3 off. I said OK, I will order 2 Burgers. He (the owner) asked if I would like to add fries and a drink to the orders for $4.50 more? I said OK, but only on 1 of them. I said I would try the Fish and Chips. He said "we only have the Halibut left I am all out of the other types of fish," I said that's ok that is all I would want would be the Halibut anyway, so it was $16 for the Halibut FISH and CHIPS right? He said yes. I said OK I will have that. I went into the washrooms with the kids to wash hands. No soap and no paper towels in either bathroom. Lights out in the men's bathroom. I said to the owner, there is no soap in the washrooms. He asked, "Do you want it now?" I said yes before we eat so the kids can wash their hands and be clean, I can fill it for you I said. No, it's OK. He went in the back and came out with 2 metal salad bowls with an inch of soap in the bottom of each one. We went inside and washed our hands. The food came out, and we sat down to eat. The Burgers were greasy and the fries equally greasy, no plates. All food is served on a wooden board with a sheet of wax paper, (I assume to soak up the grease.) My daughter had fries which I did not ask for and they were half in the ketchup and the chipotle sauce poured onto each plate, even though we did not want either sauce. Portions were not large as promised. On to the fish, 2 pieces on the smaller side and greasy fries again. I ate the fish. The first piece was greasy as well, but fish was flaky and tasted great, on to the second piece, was definitely not Halibut and tasted nothing like the first piece as it was harder and clumped together and tasted and looked nothing like the first piece. The owner came over and asked how everything was as I was into my second piece and I told him that the fish did not taste the same as the first piece and was hard and clumpy. It did not taste like the first piece at all. He said, Oh No that is Halibut and we order it in fresh every day, no GMOs and no preservatives, yada, yada, yada. OK Now on to the best part, I go up to the cash register to pay. The owner says, "I only charged you for one extra fries," I replied, that's good because I only ordered one fries extra for my son. When I looked at the bill and said, wait a second you charged me for two combos an extra $4.50 He said no, one is the Burger with the fries combo, and the other is for your fries! Pardon Me? I had the FISH AND CHIPS @ $16. He said no that is just the Fish alone at $16 I told him no when I called earlier and spoke to you, you told me that the FISH AND CHIPS was $16 for the Halibut. When I placed the order you told me it was FISH AND CHIPS, you asked if I wanted fries with the burgers, not fries with the FISH? I told you we were hungry and asked about portions, my daughter did not eat the fries and they were doused in the ketchup and greasy. He just insisted that no the fries are separate from the fish. OK. No offer to make any kind of amends so that I would be satisfied. I went to pay with my debit card. Oh, he said. The debit machine is broken and pointed to the machine with a piece of paper taped to it. I thought I told you that in the beginning. I said you did not tell me or I would have gone to the bank. There is a TD Bank across the parking lot he said. OK. Off I went kids in tow across the lot to withdraw cash. Went back and put $40 on the counter. I bet you that if I go back in two weeks the debit machine is still broken down and the washrooms are still out of paper towel and soap. Avoid this place at all costs. Very expensive, small portions, dirty washrooms, greasy as my mechanic's driveway and the list goes on. Word travels fast my friend and I don't think it is fair that you mislead people and now you are opening another franchise as well? Good luck.

Awesome is the word for the entire experience at Captain Kookoo ! As my title indicates it was hard to locate in the shopping complex as it has a dark board with gold letters and we had to call to find it . But once inside , it is indeed a great place and Robert Vinelli takes a lot of pride in first counselling you about what he has to offer before you make a choice of the dishes to order. He is so right about the Fish cod and chips .. the tartar sauce is to die for :) then we had the grilled halibut with a side salad and that was soooo delicious , just melted in the mouth with a zillion flavours ! The chicken burger (while it comes under junk , Robert with his quick sense of humour said it's best quality white flour !) but what the heck, we were floored :) While I did have a doubt about the printed ink on the paper on which the food was served , he explained that it had a wax layer over the ink that prevented any contact with food and it served to maintain hygiene:) Fully satisfied with his food and answers , we will return some time in our next trip :)

The burgers kookoos kitchen makes is incredibly crazy the first time I went there I thought it was going to be like Macdonald or something but when I ate it I loved it it was great I been going there most of the time for my burgers when I don't have allot of time I go there get some food eat and leave when I'm busy but other then that get ur guys/girl or wife/kids and take em out there you will have a blast so when u eat there think of me.

I've only been in once and that was enough to turn me off.Staff were friendly but the food was dreadful. Fries were not cooked thoroughly, halibut was greasy. Portion size was small, although when I paid I wasn't charged full price as a staff member told me that they had run out of halibut and couldn't give me a full order. I would have preferred to have been told this in advance, so I could make the decision to continue with my order. Even with the discount, it wasn't worth it.
