Different spot to stop. Cold beer, tequilla, flavoured mazcal. And scorpions. Yup, cooked ones. Live ones. Made into salt. Added to mezcal. You name it. Simple but filling food. A fun experience and great staff.
We went there for typical Mexican food. And we were not disappointed. This is part museum, part restaurant. But it is 100% fantastic food. At least what we had.I had 2 Chimichangas (tortilla closed at both ends, stuffed and fried). 1 was with Chicken and red mole sauce, the other was picadillo with green sauce. Both were fantastic but the porc one (Picadillo) was my favourite. My fiancée had tinga de pollo (chicken prepared as pulled pork) Rice and frijoles.WE had beer to go with this meal. The service was great, the restaurant was really clean.HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
I had the sampler plate which gave a great overview of Dish's from Durango. Very tasty, great staff. Half restaurant half museum.
I was in Durango for just a few hours with my Mom and another couple. We were so hungry, and it was early in the day, and we didn't know the town. How LUCKY we were to find 'Raices'! We pretty much let the owner choose our food, which was great. But the kicker; he is known as the 'scorpion king'. His T-shirt read, 'Comete tus miedos' ('eat your fears')....enter the scorpion! He brought us samplings of, yes, edible scorpions (they serve them in tacos, etc, in addition to the regular great menu!), and scorpion mescal, which he makes himself. He also gave us samples of blueberry, a vanilla concoction, and of course showed us a bucket of about 1,000 venomous scorpions he breeds/grows himself. It's amazing. As one crawled on his hand, still dangerous, he had no fear. He said, 'the nature of the scorpion is scorpion'. They just don't attack, unless provoked they are harmless. I wish people could learn that, sometimes, lol! Anyway, GREAT food, an intriguing experience, and someplace I'd highly recommend for visitors and locals alike! The food is so affordable (70 pesos for my sampler platter, stuffed me!). Thank you for making us feel at home, taking extra time to show/explain what you do, presenting us with a fine lunch and mescal, and being so open and friendly. ACES, will return for sure!
