We stumbled across this cafe/delicatessen less than 5 minutes walk from Stephansplatz and were originally just going to have coffees until we noticed that they had help yourself breakfast buffets where you could create your own muesli from an excellent selection of grains, flakes, nuts,...seeds, dried fruit, milk and yoghurt etc in a good-sized cardboard cup for the excellent price of EUR4-90 or with an added hot drink EUR5-90. Great value! There was also a hot buffet selection for EUR2-30 per 100 grams as well as a large range of fresh bakery items plus fresh fruit juices all, at what seemed like reasonable prices to us. After breakfast we had a good look at what else was on offer from take-away sandwiches, rolls, paninis, salads, soups plus, downstairs, a large range of more gourmet prepackaged foodstuffs. Staff were very helpful in explaining to us how the system worked which was very easy.
Go to the second floor deli counter and ask the assistant to make a sandwich. There are several types of bread and we chose the Imperial roll. We added freshly sliced ham off the bone, two pieces of cheese, mayonnaise and pickle. Both sandwiches cost...less then 5 Euro for both of them. So much cheaper than any bakery in town and so much fresher. There is also a buffet counter where you can buy the food by weight.
We arrived here because we wanted to eat something light and figured we would pick up fruits and maybe a custard. We were happy to see that they had a buffet station serving freshly made cold salads, Asian, Mediterranean and continental food besides desserts and...drinks. You carry a box filling in whatever you want. At the end, you weigh your box and pay the cashier. You can choose to take away or you can choose to sit and eat there. You have tables inside as well as outside where you can sit and eat but it's incredibly busy so it makes sense to avoid the peak hours and go slightly early or a little after the office lunch hours. It's perfect when you don't want too much and want to mix and match different things. We thought it was very well priced (atleast by Amsterdam standards) and we went here two times because we found the quality very good.
On the way to Stephanplatz we noticed that Henry Platz. From this moment on and all our days in Vienna we made this place a delicious meal. Fresh fruit juice, bread assortment, great bakery, hot boiled delicious food, beer and more, everything...so clean and fresh. Price is high, but you get what you pay for
