Down, that was our favorite of the trip! I love the concept and wish it was here to be home in my Californian quarter. this bar sells the brand szigeti Austrian foam wines from the glass and the bottle. there were about...10-12 different sorts in the night we were there. all were priced with 4-5 euro per glass! everyone in the bar seemed super friendly and how they had a fun time! the bartender was enthusiastic and enjoyed talking to all. we talked to some American women next to us and a local chef has introduced himself and gave us a list and handmade map of his favorite restaurants in the neighbourhood. it is one of these fun and friendly art of places loved that! the bartender gave us a few flavors that really helped us to order some new and exciting champagne varieties like rose (which knew that would be good, but it was.) note that it is indoor and outdoor, but the place is small.
My friend and I ended up there after escaping from a restaurant with horrible music at nearby Naschmarkt. To be honest, it would not have been my choice as I had always wrongly associated Szegeti with an inferior brand of sparkling wine that...you would find at discount supermarkets. She told me that it was in fact a renowned Austrian (despite the Hungarian name) brand and her boyfriend often bought some bottles there to take home. I was convinced and really liked my glass of rosé at a fair price (EUR 4.50). When you sit outside, like we did, you order inside at the bar and the charming girl behind the counter also handed us a large glass pitcher of water without asking for it, which I really appreciated. We didn't stay too long as we were tired and it got a bit chilly, but will be back for sure. The inside area (very small, only one room) looked pretty inviting as well. Schleifmühlgasse overall is one of my favourite streets in the 4th district and despite its proximity to the popular Naschmarkt it is not a tourist trap area at all.
This is a gem of a bar. The quality of the sparkling wine on offer is excellent, with over 30 different wines to try, this bar is not to be missed!
But it IS on the super-groovy Schleifmuhlgasse. There are 25 different varieties of Sekt on offer here, all one brand – Szigeti. This is not even remotely a tourist spot. The owner is always there, super knowledgeable about not only Sekt though that’s obviously...his specialty but wine, period. He doesn’t serve food other than chips crackers (really good crackers, in fact), but he’s got an arrangement where you can go to any restaurant on the street and get food to-go and bring it back to the bar eat it there. You can even have pizza delivered to the bar! LOVED this place.
